Some of it depends on your modeling software. I make my props for use in DS 4.8 in Cinema 4D. The models are built inside C4D to scale and then exported as an obj and then imported ito DS using the standard C4D import options ( File menu-> Import-> pick the file to import-> select the C4D import in my case, but there are options for other packages). Most of the stuff I make is architectural, with some vehicles and other mechanicals, so I can't comment on how it might work for clothing or hair. I do remember seeing threads talking about exporting figures to use inside modeling packages to use as references for making clothes and hair. Once the clothing/hair is made then you export it from the modeling software and import to DS
Another way to easily check your scaling once a prop is in DS is to simply load a cube primitive. For example If I'm sizing a room element and need an 8 ft wall then I'll load an 8 ft. cube primitive to use as a measuring reference. (Create Menu-> new Primitive).
I THINK you can also use the Measure Metrics plug in for props as well as figures. http://www.daz3d.com/measure-metrics-for-daz-studio
Hope this helps
mcasual has a real nice sizing script...

It will give the size of the item in inches or cm and allow you to scale it.
After that operation is finished, I export the item at Daz scale and reimport it, at Daz scale...that 'locks in' the changes and makes the changes permanent.
