HDRI images

Hi all, I have some HRDI files from a DeviantArt download but am unsure how to use them. In my environment tab, I set it to finite sphere and changed the image to my HDRI and selected to show floor. But the images are always blurry. I read somewhere about an uber SkyDome or something. Can someone point me towards a tutorial or give me a quick run down on how to do it? Thanks!

Can you link to the HDR, it could be the HDR itself is a problem.

I would persevere with the Iray dome before getting into all the extra complication of a third party dome.

It was this pack. So I can achieve a render where my model looks like it's in the scene of the HDRI image using just the environment tab?

Are you using the correct image? Not all HDR images can be used as a backdrop, some are only for lighting.

I don't see a link... but yes the built in dome is able to do what you want.

  • As others have said, you may have picked the wrong image out of the pack (as there are usually several files for various purposes), or the set may only be for lighting (which may be why it's blurry) and not to provide a background.

If you want a very high quality set to play with, which will absolutely provide a sharp background as well giving good outdoor lighting, try this free set from RenderMan Pixar (it's even public domain). It's of their campus, and as the creator says "Feel free to use it whenever you require a panorama with giant lamp" laugh Actually you avoid the lamp and the set can actually come in quite useful. There are two sizes of HDRI (the bigger, the better). It's important that you choose an .exr file (or .hdr in other sets) in the Iray Environment panel.
