Help with DAZ Connect vs DIM Assets

Long story short:

Custom categorized about 40GB of product and I just found out that I have to use DAZ Connect to download the encrypted purchases.

  • I use 2 boxes for intance rendering only and 1 laptop for the design work.
  • I manually sync a "master content folder" between all 3 boxes. (ie paths are all the same)

Question(s):

1. Should I just forget offline downloads with the DAZ Install Manager? (Is it going to be phased out and I should just move on to using DC?)

2. You can customize the folder location DAZ Connect uses. However, can I synchronize that folder and files between multiple boxes and it still will work? (Yes, the directory/tree structure would be the same amongst the boxes).

3. Is there a way to push/reinstall my current assets/downloads into the DAZ Connect structure without having to redownload assets through DC for all my items? (My end focus is download once and sync locally)

Closing

I really appreciate your help on this. I am frustrated with DAZ as I just got the DAM (Digital Asset Management) thing to flow my way and the encryption/DAZ Connect has posed as another hurdle. This shouldn't be difficult. Emphasis on should. I digress. Thank you for your support and if I got to to download 60GB of cloud assets to 3 places...ugh.

Daz Install Manager will still be round and you can continue to use it for most items.  So far only a few items require Daz Connect.

You can synchronize the folders on your machines; each one needs to log in once to associate it with your account, but you don't need to download everything separately on each machine.

If you want to move your DIM-installed files to the Daz Connect structure, Daz Connect will check if the files match before downloading them and copy the already installed files if they are the same (it won't automatically uninstall the DIM-installed files).  Right now, Daz Connect can't install all the thing that DIM can.

  • Thanks Fixmypcmike. I appreciate your time.

    • I am going to try out that file sync between DAZ Connect folders next week. It takes awhile to download 60GB for me and then test local replication.
    • I do log into each machine to verify things work and they can communicate with DAZ servers if need be.
    • Good note on DIM and DC...looks like there might be duplicate files I need to prune. (My 2 render boxes have limited HDD space. Only Win, Daz, and Models)
    • Good note that some things in DC can't download things that DIM can and vice versa. (My recent purchases weren't showing up in DIM because they were a DC product only.)
    • FWISW - DC looks prettier. I am going to try a DC only setup so I don't track/replicate 2 different directories of assets. (avoid duplicity, keeping it simple (ha))

  • Well I hope they get stuff worked out.

    • Copying DAZ Connect folders to a 2nd PC went well. However, I had to manually (right-click) install every product. There isn't a mass-go button.
    • Using the offline installer ....wow! a manual 2 file download per product. Oh, when I went to "update metadata"...it blew out every offline installed product out of DAZ. Files are still in the directories, but DAZ dropped the rerferences somewhere. Had to redo the whole "Offline file import procedure". Luckily, I had a copy of the offline files as they get deleted during importing.

If you are doing one piece at a time...the current manner isn't bad. However, I keep all my assets available and a rebuild is going to be work. The offline manner for a large order will be nuts until they get a better DL manager.

The only benefit I am seeing to DAZ Connect is incremental updates and patching to product packages.

    I'm so frustrated.

OP/Admin Please close this post. Solutions will be had in DAZ Studio 7.

If you click All on the left in Smart Content>Product tab, use the Available filter button at the bottom of the pane to show only Connect-ready products not installed, click on the first, shift-click on the last, right-click and select Install you can do the lot (or perhaps, more sensibly, do a number but not all) at once.

  • Thank you Richard for the notation.

That is exactly how I got the first batch of products downloaded and installed. And that is how I learned that I didn't get all the my products too (ha!). Learning curve for everything. Afterwards, I had to go to the Content Libary, Products, and then go through each section and manually download the remaining products.

I'm hopeful there will improvements in UI and synchronization in the DAM (digital asset management) portion of the DAZ. As for now, I've resigned to go back to a custom-made categories, but utilizing the DAZ Connect Stack instead of DIM.

I do like the idea of incremental updates to the assets to alleviate full product downloads to save some bandwidth/time.
