How do I add content directories on Mac

I have installed my additional Daz content on my external hard drive because Apple doesn't think you should ever need to increase your storage space since 250gb is plenty.

Anyway, when I pull up the content manager I can see the default base directories. I want to add my external HD directories. The add button on the left is greyed out and when right-clicking, there is only the option to edit or delete. I have no problem doing it on a PC but mac doesn't seem to want to let me.
Is it a permission issue? I've given it permission to modify files and such. How can I fix this?

    I have so many questions:

    1. Richard's question, of course
    2. What format is your drive since not all formats play nice
    3. Can you copy and paste to this drive

    for a start....

I always did it directly in the Content Library:

If it's useful, my external drive is formatted using APFS (but as far as I remember, I started with HFS+, so using an Apple file system).

Elor is correct, I do that almost daily adding/removing libraries for different test purposes.
