A quick go (Sackboy and kitteh may be on the spaceship ...): Red Planet

Ha.. I guess RED is the favorite color this month.. Woo hoot... Can't go anywhere without Sackboy AND Kitteh.. so I HOPE they are on the spaceship!  LOL.  Thanks for joining the fun again this year Simon.

Just be glad I went back and put a dress on her!  cheeky

As for being here, you've kept me rendering over the past ... um, LOT of years, with your monthly challenges, so where you go, I follow (in a non-creepy way ...)

haa.. yeah.. thanks for the clothes... and I BLUSH at your following me :)  non-creepy... of course LOL

  • Fae3DFae3D Posts: 2,627

Oh boy, JUST barely got this one in on time!  I know everyone else has already done red, but that's what I've been working on, so I decided to go ahead with it.  Red is a pretty awesome color, anyway ^_^

    Seeing Red

I always liked those photographs where they would make the whole thing black and white except for just one color. So I thought I’d give it a try! And of course, for my first attempt, I thought I’d go with something subtle, just barely noticeable …you know, like red! XD

    Rendered in Daz Studio Iray.

    Postwork in Pixelmator Pro.

Very nice but how did you did it ? Postwork or in Daz itself ?

    -----

Just in time, and like last January, lighting was a problem and while I didn't know what was going wrong, unlike last Januray, I had a fair idea of where I wanted to end. Except the main character, Warrin, was noisy even after 10,000 iterations (enough to get the whole picture near a 99% convergence ratio). Turns out it's a problem related to emissive surfaces, so I removed anything not visible in the viewport and disable the emission on objects I could not remove (the modelled spotlights overlooking the music scene are not visible but had an emissive surface: I kept them because they are rigged, allowing an easy positionning of the spotlights (as in Daz Studio spotlights) parented to them).

Like @acb and @SofaCitizen, I have chosen blue the main colour, in part inspired by the manga Blue Giant (about a high school student who have fallen in love with jazz and saxophone) and called my render, Blue Giant too:

One day, while reading the local newspaper, a photo caught Lacey's eyes.

Under the article's title, 'Jazz Concert for the grand reopening of the newly renovated Rising Sun', the saxophonist was no more and no less than the man who played for both of them last June, during Music World Day.

'What a perfect timing', she thought, before booking two tickets.

She almost forgot to make sure Victoria was not planning something for the same evening, and a couple of days ago, both dressed to the nines, they sat on the first row and had a fantastic evening, far from the turmoil of the outside world.

All items used are in the gallery.

The saxophonist also appeared in a previous render: Fête de la musique

Not sure if you were asking me or someone else, but if it was me, what I did was render the scene twice: once in color, once in black and white.  Then I layered them on top of each other in my image editor (Pixelmator Pro) and erased parts of the black and white render to let the color one show through.  There's probably an easier way, but this was all I could come up with.  If there is a way to do all that in Daz, that would be really neat!

Depending on when the idea comes to me, I use your way quite often. However, if I know during the staging that I want to achieve this effect, I use canvases.

For my entry I rendered a canvas of the guitar and laid it over the grayscale scene in gimp.

To use this on a single surface group you could duplicate the prop and hide everything that should be gray at one and everything else at the other and render a canvas of the former.

Interesting!  I keep seeing people talk about canvases, I'm going to have to look into those at some point.  They sound useful.  Thanks for letting me know!

Pick any month you wish and create a new piece of artwork with that TEXTURE.  Enjoy and have fun.  This is a short month so don't dilly dally too long... giggles

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!  Yes, I don't see a whole lot of art done in that style anymore.  And more votes for canvases, lol!

The crowd are a bunch of G3 figures with lots of instances of them. I simply downscaled the textures and reduced the SubD. As soon as it fit into the graphics memory, I rendered it and went to sleep. smiley

Thank you and yes, I was asking you.

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, I was sure I saw a product sold here that could give this kind of effects, and I was looking for it but did not found it.

I tried canvases a year or two ago, following a tutoriel by sickleyield, but off the top of my head, I stopped because I didn't know what to do with the resulting files in Affinity Photo, which is too bad because it feels like a really useful tool.

Well, canvases certainly can do much more than what I use it for. In this case there's not much special to do in your graphics program:

First I select the object(s) I want to single out and setup a canvas like: Type="beauty", alpha="on" and NodeList="Create from Selection...". This gives a render of just the visible parts of the selected object(s) as seen from the camera with a transparent background, which you can use as a layer in the grafic program of your choice.

Well done nattaruk... I always marvel at Stone statues and how they can have such detail... Specially the Sphynx.. etc.  All done with hand tools!  Amazing craftsmenship.  We lack that in structures these days.  Thanks for sharing.  Well done :)

I had another idea in mind, around stone, but I didn't have the motivation for a 'let's put the VRAM to test' scene, so here a simple, peaceful Dawn over Kyoto, with Hanako 9 wearing a yukata.

I textured the yukata with the beautiful silk from the Japanese Portrait Studio Bundle and kept it as silk (I would have prefered a kimono but the one I have for G9 is a 'western' design, part of a lingerie set and would definitely no give the same mood to the render cheeky).

So, you guessed it, the theme is clothes.

No real story, just a some ideas thrown at the wall (see the gallery) because I mainly wanted a portrait using Old Kyoto as a backdrop.

Link to the items used in the gallery. The yukata is freebie is availabe on ShareCG, by yomiuri (a G8F version is also available):
