How to design clothes for models - help and advice please.

in New Users
Hi there,
Can anyone please tell me how I can design my own clothes for the DAZ 3d models? I have a fantasy set of characters that I wish to design clothes and outfits for, so I am not looking to adapt an exisiting texture and simply re-colouring it in photoshop. Is this possible build my own clothes and how do I begin?
Thanks so much.

I haven't made my own yet, but I have taken clothes from other formats and altered them to what I want and use in Daz.
I had found some free models that were in 3dsMax and obj format so I brought them into Hexagon (3d modeler) and removed everything I didn't want. This is the step I think is going to be similar to your making from scratch.
You will want to export the figure you plan on making the outfit for as an obj or fbx so you can import it into a 3d modeler (like Hexagon or blender, etc.)
Then build your mesh around the figure for your clothes, there are many tutorials on youtube on how exactly to do this.
When you have your outfit completed, then you need to UV map it (how to do this depends on what modeling software you are using)
When all that is done, import your clothing into daz and if you are using a G1 or G2 figure, then you can simply use the transfer rigging to make the clothing move with a figure. (1. convert the object to figure in the edit->object->rigging menu witht he Triax weight system, 2. select Transfer utility from edit->figure, 3. in the left dropdown under source, select your G1 or G2 figure and on the right under target, select your clothing item and click ok)
That's the simplified version for now
Wow! Thanks very much for the reply. I have 3ds Max so presumably I can use that. So the clothing a geometric shape or plane, designed as required, then imported back into Daz as an obj or fbx and some how attached to the Genesis model again? Or do I bring the whole figure with the clothes attached? I don't need it for animation as the end result will only be stills.
I will have to deconstruct a clothes character that comes with Daz studio to see how they have configued the UV map.
Thanks, I will give it a try.

Most tutorials I've seen start with a sub-divided primitive shape (such as a cilinder or cube)
You only need to import the base figure so you can line up the clothing item correctly as you are working on it.
When you finish creating your model and import it into Daz, it will be a static object, so you load the genesis 1 or 2 figure and use the rigging transfer to turn the object into a clothing item that will fit-to and move with the model as you pose it.
You can use any modeler which can create obj.
If you want clothes that you can use for multiple scenes then you will need to model the clothes around the figure in default T pose, export them (only the clothes) from your modeler as obj, import back in DS and rig them using the transfer utility so that they conform to your figure.
Thanks very much for your input. I am in the middle of giving it all a try. Will let you know.

I remember there was a thread or a lot of discussion on Marvelous Designer (just add dot com.) I don't do modeling so I don't know how good it is, but there are videos and tutorials.
There are at least 2 Video Tutorial in the Shop
one by Dreamlight using Hexagon as a modeler (for around 10$) and another one where i don't remember who made it.
There is also a written Tutorial(s) by Sickleyield on Deviant Art using Blender - > http://sickleyield.deviantart.com/journal/
Thanks so much. My first attempt failed, but I am hopefully of second and third goes. :) Thanks again for your comments.
