With a complex model, is thre a way to highlight and turn almost all elements on or off at once? I really hate having to click everything individually.
Possibly, although I've not checked these notes recently:
To toggle a bunch of nodes (to hide, or not cast shadows, etc.), select the root node you want to start from in the Scene Tab and right-click, then choose "Select Children". Now you can toggle them all invisible simultaneously in Parameters tab—Display. Just make sure you turn off both Visible and Visible In Render. Option2: put them in a group, hide the group node.

After selecting children, doesn't clicking on the eye symbol in the scene tab make the them disappear in the window and the render? I think it does, that way you can run through the scene tab and make everything you want, invisible without switching tabs back and forth.

Yes, but the eye symbol only hides one node at a time. So if you wanted to, say, hide everything from the waist up on Genesis, you would have to click something like 50 or 60 eye icons. Using the Parameters tab you can do it all in a single shot.
