Iray shaders with 3delight

So, what happens if you use an Iray shader on something but render it with 3Delight?

Possibly nothing...but more likely a very sub-optimal render or 'blank'/white figures.

  • Whichever renderer you use is looking for parameters on the surfaces with particular names. I don't think there are many exact names in common between 3Delight and Iray.

I suspect this is probably why many custom 3Delight shaders don't show up properly (if they show up at all) in the Viewport, until you render. Remember that the Viewport uses a renderer as well, in this case the OpenGL of your graphics card.

  • Okay, that's what suspected would happen. Thanks everyone!

Yeah, and the few they do have in common don't necessarily mean the same thing...

There's a bit more as to why the custom shaders are no-shows, but that is part of it.

  • The one Iray-only product I've rendered in 3DL ended up excessively shiny.

Then all it would take is a few minor adjustments to tweak the specular parameters.  Some would basically require starting from the raw maps and building a new material from scratch.

I use a "Matte Rubber" shader on top of the 3DL shader to get rid of the gloss in iray. It's a quick and dirty workaround, but it works, and doesn't (usually) affect anything else.
