Blank renders with Iray
First of all, it's been a while since I used DS and I'm way out of the loop on what has changed in the last couple of years since I last played with it.
My problem is, why are my Iray renders not working?
If I try to render with NVIDIA Iray (MDL) - all I get is blank nothing. Switching between CPU, CUDA, or both makes no difference either.
If I switch to Multi-Pass OpenGL - I get a render.
And if I switch to 3Delight (RSL) - I get a render.
Forget running a complex scene, this is being tested on a ball with a spotlight on it and nothing more than that. And nothing renders in Iray.
So what gives? Why are Iray renders not working? Is this card not supported? Do I need to downgrade from DS 4.23.0.1 to a lesser version? What am I missing?
Baffled!

What drivce is it, other than "up to date"?
Windows 11 and NVIDIA drivers.
Device? It's a PC.
And the solution was...uninstall the latest version and install a copy of 4.8 from my archives. IRAY renders run straight out of the gate. Wow.
Sorry, driver.
A lot of things will not work in 4.8.
Yeah, but nothing renders in IRAY in 4.23. As long as 4.8 does the basics of rendering a scene, I can fix the rest in post, especially as I don't use dforce very often and haven't moved on from Genesis 6 & 7 as they cover what I want, to say nothing of Vicky 4 content that is fine for mid- to distance figures. I even use Vicky 3 from time to time.
I'll maybe try 4.24 or whatever the next iteration is, but until then 4.8 is going to cover me.
Shame Daz don't give you access to the older iterations in your library and I was just lucky I found that copy of 4.8.
Since I've been out of the loop for a couple of years or so, what won't work? Thanks.
I can't recall exactly, or even very approximately, what has been added since 4.8 but I suspect a lot of plugins and even many scripts will fail, and you will lack a range of features and fixes. You can always use the Public Build (Beta) to run two different versions - but I am pretty sure there were changes to the database in 4.9, so it may be prudent to run separate databases for each if you decide to go that way (Edit>Preferences>CMS Settings and change the Content Cluster location)
PostgreSQL was added, and I think became the default, before that (4.6.x.x?) - but yes, Valentina support was completely dropped with 4.9 at the same time as there were soem changes to the database tables (which meant data was added to the 4.8 tables when installing content and then converted automatically to the 4.9+ form, I am not sure if that is still done).
Thanks for the clarification. At least it sounds like nothing I'm going to miss in terms of being able to render images. I organise my folders manually anywhay so that things are themed and easier to me to find, so it doesn't sound like it will impact me much. Plugins? Not sure I have any, LOL.
