Tattoos, freckles etc.

Hi all, I was wondering something. I'm using Genesis 3 female and wanted to know if it's possible to use Photoshop and almost 'peel her skin off' and retexture the whole thing in Photoshop to add blemishes, freckles, tattoos and things. How would one go about doing this? Thanks!

Open the texture image you want to work on in your 2D paint program (I use paint.net, Painter, Paintshop and even Windows Paint on occasion LOL).

Save it with a new file name. Honestly, do this first and best to save it as a loseless format (I think PSD for Photoshop), not jpg. You can do this in the original folder or a new "project" folder

Now have fun with it, save it, save it again as jpg. Then load to G3F with surfaces tab.

You're unlikly to get exactly what you want first time round (or 2nd, 3rd...) but do reworking from the lossless file.

That's the simple version, what results you get depends on your skill with and knowledge of the 2D program.

I'm assuming you have a working knowledge of where to find stuff in your Daz Studio Contents folder. If not just ask.

There are products here for adding blemishes, freckles etc to earlier generations so I expect it's only a matter of time...

Awesome, thanks. I know my way around Photoshop with my eyes closed lol. So do I just edit a current texture? Say I use the standard Gen3 Female, where will I find the original texture file?

Yes, if it's for your own use (you can't share the new texture you have made, you can share renders that use the texture on a 3D model)

If you select part of the skin texture in the surfaces tab then go to the Diffuse Colour slider, there should be a small icon on the left side, if you mouse over that it will show the file path to the texture being used, right click to get a drop down menu and select <browse>(the 1st option).

You can open the textures in your 2D program from there.

If you used DIM to install Daz Studio files the path should be - Windows (C:)/Users/Public/Public Documents/My DAZ 3D Library/Runtime/Textures/Raiya/Jeane

You can get to the folder that content is in from the Content Library tab by right clicking an icon and choosing <Browse to file location>.

  • Hi Pack,

I dont want to hijack this question, but I'm hoping kyle will need this info aswell..

I saw this post, and started messing with the skin, making a snake skin.. I thought by the time I was done, that I would be able to save the character and reload a new base..

well, obviously those are the base files, so I had to reinstall the g3 essentials.

So then I copied and pasted all the altered mats to a seperate folder, but when changed, it changed the base new load character aswell..

The question is, is there a way to save a new base character? say, genesis 3 snake.. or whatever..

    thanks.

    Hey there Filthy :-)

I'm a painter and sculptor that uses computers because my hands can't do what they used to. How I do stuff on a PC is seldom even close to optimal. I find what works for me then stop looking. That said -

When I get a reworked skin texture how I like it I save as a material Preset, It shows in Smart Content under Unassigned when a character that can use it is selected.

Unlikely to be the best way but it works for me and if I lose it, well I keep a copy of the duf file in the project folder and can drag and drop that to DS and resave

    Pack

    ------------------------------

PS I have separate DIM loaded R/T's for each generation and will sometimes create a new subfolder under Materials for reworked skins so I can get to them easily from Content Library which is where I mostly work from.
I believe you can write metadata for non DAZ products so stuff works with Smart Content but I haven't looked into that.

EDIT: Oh dear, for the second time today, I seem to have missed the main point of a question.

Yes you can save as a new character, including any morph changes (or not) you make. I do it as "Save as>Character Preset. The icon to load it shows up in Smart Content>Unassigned>Follower

I've always left my final reworked jpg(s) in the runtime/textures folder of the character whose texture they are based on (and transferred any working images to a non R/T project folder, probably not the best system but it evolved organically). You may have to manually reapply the new textures to the base G3 if you want your new textures in their own folder structure and then save the character preset.
