Best and easiest to use NAS for storing Daz content in 2024

Hi

Im looking into a UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus to store Daz content but since Im a NAS noobie I thought I might ask fellow Daz users for some words of advise. which NAS do you guys think is easier to install/use and overall best in terms of performance?

    Do you really need a NAS? By that I mean do you have multiple locations you want to access your content from? That box is $700 even before you've added the drives. That buys you a lot of USB connected storage...

    You can get a 16TB clockwork drive for under $250 from Western Digital or an 8TB SSD from Sandisk for around $500. You can make those visible across your entire network and if you noticed a performance loss vs. a dedicated NAS unit I'd be amazed. I can't imagine your content extends to greater than 8TB and is more than likely considerably smaller.

    Daz content is well within the range of USB drives. If you want RAID-1 redundancy buy two of them.

    If you must have a NAS for reasons I haven't considered than have a look at the Synology range. We use a four bay one in our small office and they are as plug-n-play as you can get. Some NAS units can be a pain in the proverbial to get running but the smaller Synology ones are aimed at individuals who want to host their own cloud. The DS220j should suit you fine with two bays, and is less than half the price of the one you mentioned. In terms of performance, the worst performing NAS and the best performing one will differ by a few seconds at most - loading times for your models are influenced heavily by far more factors than data transfer rate.

    I'd be interested to hear other people's opinion on this as well.

    I use Terra-master NAS 10Gbe with Raid1 ower 1 year, so it's great! But better Qnap all flash (overpriced), 2x Thunderbolt (20Gbe) abd 10Gbe Lan. I work at 3 computers at the same time. On 2 of them rendering, on the main one development and testing. All are connected to one NAS. The need to purchase a NAS depends on your needs.

    Some routers support an external drive over USB. Could be the easy option.

    I'm at 8.4TB after 2.5 years - is that bad? I do save the download zips in there and maybe a bunch of other art assets which would bump it up a little.

    Anyway, I second the shout for a Synology NAS. Reasonably quiet and was simple enough to setup. Has a whole bunch of features that I still haven't really dug into much. Important thing is it does it's job well and, so far, hasn't caused me any issues. Obviously not as quick as a local SSD would be but we can't have everything.

    It's just anecdotal evidance but if you go with QNAP I would consider disabling the remote (internet) access. A colleague at work had his QNAP encrypted and his data held to ransom by someone who managed to use the remote access to get in. Although, if you only use your NAS for Daz3D projects from one location then you should probably disable remote access to it anyway since it's not needed.

    Thanks for your answer, I do own about 12Tb but I would also use it for regular backups for work. The suggestion you make is quite reasonable pricewise, however I dont know if there is a performance issue between a SSD and a modern HDD (I stopped using hdd a while ago since my computer crashed with severe loss of data)

    checking Qnap. Is the Terramaster easy to install/friendly to newbies?

    Terramaster very friendly. They have recently updated their entire product line and everything is reasonably priced. 

    Reading speed is very important to me, so I am planning to replace my 10 Gigabit NAS on Qnap All Flash NAS with 2 Thunderbolt (20Gbe) and 10Gbe Lan. Some 360 degree panoramic scenes and under 100 people, are over 100 gigs in size and it takes a very long time to open if with HDD, even RAID1 doesn't help much. Very convenient automatic backup, I do from 3 computers, also make a copy of Daz content. Sometimes I turn it on as a client server. I have an employee who poses for my projects, we now always have a synchronized library of Daz files.

    To speak the truth I hadnt fully considered the speed to pull assets from one to another, and it should indeed be a major factor in my choice. Thank you all for your kind responses.

    What brand/model do you recommend/ are you getting?

    I use a TERRAMASTER F5-422 10Gbe, can't say I recommend it, the model is a bit outdated. From the disadvantages - when reading from disks, when starting the synchronization server - you can always hear HDDs working (creaking). But it is the disks themselves, HDD for NAS always heard during operation, in any NAS. Therefore, I will choose to replace ALL FLASH models, for example QNAP TBS-h574TX-i5-16G although I consider its cost overpriced, and 8Tb SSD in general cost is not adequate. TERRAMASTER recently released a line of 2 new NAS ALL FLASH, but they have only 10 gigabit port (max 1024Mb/s) but at a very affordable price. The QNAP model has a 10 gigabit port and 2x Thunderbolt4. 2 of my 3 computers have these ports and the transfer speeds on them will be 20Gbe. Compared to my current NAS 2 HDDs in RAID1 give a speed of 300-430Mb/s (although in advertisements write that up to 650Mb/s), in the QNAP advertisement promises a read speed of up to 2876 MB/s. I can't recommend you anything, this is my upgrade plan, this is the maximum read speed I could find. But I have gigantic scenes, I have an employee and hopefully the number will increase, well I work at 3 computers at the same time. I use Daz Studio to create content that pays off, so I can and am interested in increasing speeds and simplifying processes. Well and my current NAS will remain, 5 disks up to 100Tb. I will make copies of operating systems and Daz content from ALL FLASH NAS on it.
