I have a question for anyone who uses Gimp. How the $%#$ do you use the text tool? Everytime I try, my text is backwards!! I can't figure out how to type something forwards. Any advice?

Not sure what you have problems with, if you activate the text tool, click on the canvas and type text it is "backwards" ? if you are talking about text going from right to left (not mirrored, or are the characters mirrored) the only thing I can think of are:
1: Using a language that is right to left.
2: You have set the character spacing parameter to a bigger negative value in the text tool options
3: If you have the flip canvas set in the view menu it will write text right to left if I remember correct
And if there is no solution that you can find, apply an X scale of -100% to the text after creating it.
And you are in [good?] company finding GIMP to be obscure & difficult to use!

Richard
In GIMP, with a text layer active, select the "text tool". In the Tool options window check the "Use editor" box. This should open a new menu. In the new menu insure the "From left to right" icon is checked. Then click "Close".
Hopefully that fixes the problem.
@cricket I believe this is the solution for the problem, if not please make a screenshot of the text tool settings next to the layer of the backwards text so we can see what the problem is
Pls post a screenshot or let us know what language are you using for typing in text... I use both Chinese and Japanese... there's no such issue on my side with default settings in the latest GIMP version (2.10.38 rev1)
+ 1 And also try Krita + Thanx
Sorry, off line the last few days due to the hurricane. I'm at work now, but basically I selected the text tool and typed. If I type the word "text" it will show as "txet". I have "From left to right" selected and it doesn't make a difference. I'll try to take a screen shot when I get home.
Check to see if by mistake you have set a negative space for you letters spacing
