New Artist Seeking Mentor

in New Users
Hello, all...My name is Phoenix DeFalco. I've been working with DAZ Studio since 4.0, but I haven't actually done anything serious until a couple years ago. I want to learn to create my own content to become a Published Artist, but I'm really struggling with all of the information, and am beginning to feel overwhelmed. So, I've decided to reach out to the Great and Powerful Oz-- Erm, I mean, the world wide web, and hope that someone is willing to help...I'm looking for an experienced Graphic Artist/Modeller, willing to become a 1-on-1 Mentor to me, to help me learn to create my own content. I use DAZ Studio, and a 2D program called Photobie, because I have no money and GIMP keeps freezing during it's startup cycle, no matter how many times I uninstall and reinstall it. I also have Blender 2.76, but because it's such a difficult and confusing program, I haven't been able to learn how to use it. If you are an experienced, knowledgeable artist who is willing to take the time to teach me, please, by all means, contact me either by PM or by commenting on this thread. Thank you all for reading this.

I can't help with finding a mentor, but I can offer a piece of advice until you find one. There are some really great tutorials both here in the DAZ shop and at other sites produced by some of the vendors here. They have really helped me a lot and I highly recommend them for a little one on one learning. I would start with one thing you want to make clothing, hair, props and choose the tutorial that best suits that one thing to start. Just remember to start small to learn all of the techniques you learn and then do the bigger more complicated stuff. Here are some links that you may or may not have seen:
Clothing: Classic Bikini, Male Content Support Thread (lots of great links and helpful advice that can actually be applied to clothing for either gender although topic is obviously for male clothing)
Modeling other things: Modeling in Hexagon - Fantasy Tower, Youtube is a great resources for modeling tutorials and you can search for a specific modeling program if you have a preference or already own a program.
Skin Texturing: I haven't found a lot of tutorials on this subject, but I did find an older one on another site for V4 generation models and the techniques still apply for most generations I think. I don't think I can link that, but you can do a search and find it over on Renderosity. I wish someone would do an updated tutorial and have it available in the DAZ shop. There are some great merchant resources here that you can buy here, but I don't know if they give directions. I would start by copying the skin that comes with a figure you already own and playing around with that in a 2D program like Gimp or Photoshop. Remember to save it as something else so you don't overwrite the original. Just remember that skins you modify can only be used for your own purpose. You would have to start with a Merchant Resource or something of your own design if you want to sell anything.
There are other tutorials around both here in the DAZ shop and other places, but I don't them so don't know how good they are. Others might have suggestions. I don't know how one goes about getting a one on one mentor here.
