Copying surface settings while not changing image maps

I know this has been asked and answered before, but with the lack of a working forum search I cannot find it.
I want to copy the settings I have tweaked on one surface e.g. Face, to another surface e.g. Arms, but obviously don't want to copy the face image maps to the arms. I believe I have read this can be done by usng the Control key in some way at some point, but I have been unable to get this behaviour by experimentation.
What I'm doing is:
1. Right click surface A in Surfaces tab and choose Copy selected surface(s)
2. Right click surface B in Surfaces tab and choose Paste selected surface(s)
I have tried holding Ctrl down on any and all the clicks involved, but in all cases the image maps from surface A end up on surface B as well as the settings, with predictably awful results.

Holding the Control key will display options works when you're applying a preset, but AFAIK not when you copy and paste settings.
What you could do however is save a shader preset from the surface you're ok with and then apply that shader preset to the other surfaces using the Control key trick to not replace the maps.
Thanks for the responses Leana and Phoenix. I realise I should have said I'm using Iray Surfaces, in case it makes a difference.
Phoenix, I have tried what you suggest - at least if I understand your suggestion correctly - and cannot select channels to copy.
Leana, the saving a shader preset is a good idea, sounds like it could give me the behaviour I want.
