MOHAIR WOOL

Hi everybody,

I'm working on an image with a killer lady and I'd like her to wear the kind of mohair wool "punkish" jumper (see attached images)
Someone know where I could find one, or some shaders ?

In advance, a big thank you !

Cheers !

  • A shader won't really be able to add the fine hairs, so I am not sure how close it would be possible to get.

The best I could find in my runtime is https://www.daz3d.com/uhd-fuzzy-cloth-shaders-and-merchant-resource by Dimension Theory. It has some adjustments that might help get the fuzz up.

I think all of my knitted shaders are based on a smooth thread or worsted wool knit fabric. I wonder if one could create a fabric from strand hair with curves and use it as a base for a shader?

    Hey !
I think it could work, I'm gonna try that. Thanks for this info !

If someone has any other idée, I'm still interested.
I will post the result here.

    Cheers !

My first thought went to these: https://www.daz3d.com/fluffy-rugs

Not sure you could do much with those, but you could do similar using the SBH tool in Studio. I recently used it to make a pile of hay and it was pretty easy. I imagine you could put any old jumper on your character and grow the strands out of it. Could even add simulation settings if you wanted a more dynamicism.

  • I'm also not aware of another option that is quite what you're looking for.

I also have shaders memmcneil70 linked above, so I tried tossing them on a sweater to see how they turned out. Overall pretty good, especially at a medium range. I think the results would look "fuzzier" at higher tiling, but you lose out on some of the knit texture you get in the type of sweater you're talking about. Other thing to note would be this set focuses on generally uniform colors on the knit textures, I picked this one for having more variety, but it doesn't come with patterns like your first example. If you like the look though, I think it wouldn't be too difficult to edit and create some patterns on your own.

One other item in the store that I don't own to test it out, but that might fit, is this: https://www.daz3d.com/dg-iray-fur-flocking-scales-shader-presets the fur/flocked look isn't quite mohair, but might get you in the direction you are looking for.

Trying to attach my closer-up shot, the forum is fighting me on it though...

well, sorry guess that was a waste of time, but if you look at the product page at the last promo you'll get a sense of what happens in close up shots around curved surfaces, and make a call based on that if it works for what you are trying to do. Of course if you already own it you can try it out lol.

That looks like a very useful set of shaders!

I'm sure that I will be able to find the right solution in all this !!
Thanks a lot for all the infos and ideas !
The other solution would be to import the jumper in maya and generate the texture there...

    Cheers !

  • This just went on sale! {and going by the download speed, it is rather popular}

They are. I missed them because I wasn't creative enough to open the promo page in my 'Fabrics Leathers Fur' folder. I was more focused on the idea of knitted fabrics.
