Apocalyptic Friends - How to use the poses

I am finding that I can't get the poses that include props to work. (The "Expressive" ones work as expected, as do other parts of this detailed set of products.) It loads the prop, but no pose is applied. There's nothing obvious in the log. Surely I'm doing something wrong, but what?

I seem to recall running into a similar problem on another product I picked up not long ago, but I don't remember which right now.

I loaded up Beau (and reminded myself that I have a lot of products I haven't tried yet), loaded two of the props (skateboard right hand and bat left hand) by dragging them onto Beau to parent them to his body, applied the appropriate H.Pose to Beau (and just Beau), and everything worked and poses were applied.
