Free Stuffs ?

I've been running around all the sites and grabbing everything free, and getting like so much stuff I cant use, or know what actual converter I need to convert stuff..

Just seeming like a big hassle, prolly easier to uninstall, reinstall and just start buying stuff eh..

only if I had the money right, lol...

Anyways.. does anyone have a huge zip file of years of free stuff to drop like a bomb on me :)

thanks.

Have you been to sharecg? Lots of freebies there. You need to register to download but it is definitely worth your time. smiley

Ummm...even if it is free, most of it can't be 'shared' that way...us freebie  providers do get rather upset with things like that.

You can join the PC+ club and get a free product (of their choosing) every week and an extra one every month. You can get thousands of older items for $1.99 each. And most of it can be installed easily with the Daz Install Manager and works out of the box in Daz Studio. You just have to watch out for a few old things that haven't been updated for the latest Studio versions. The Daz store won't warn you about that. But you have a 30 day return policy in case you get something that doesn't work. Watch for PC+ membership sales that usually happen around the time of March Madness.

Or less with the frequent sales on it...

  • I signed up for sharecg, renderosity, evilessence, most-digital-creations..

I'm just getting tons of stuff from everywhere, and any links i get.. unfortunatley I have no idea really what I'm getting and what will even work..

I just have the base characters, gen1/2/3 and I see v this, name that, vthis namethat, etcc... drives me nuts, and I end up with tons of stuff that's not working on my base chars :/

I think in that case the first thing you should look for is the Product Compatibility chart, there's one around here somewhere that explains which items can be used with which models.

  • ByrdieByrdie Posts: 1,783

Yeah, that's the one. Forgot where it was. blush

  • So, if I'm reading that right...

say on the first one on that list, for example.. "Victoria 6 Gen2" should work with Gen2 female base?

  • ByrdieByrdie Posts: 1,783

Yes, now you're getting the hang of it. Follow along there and you should make progress. smiley

  • I just checked, I got like 12gigs of stuff I've downloaded, and atleast 1/2 I cant use..

like, alot of stuff asks for dsf files for various characters like victoria, v4, etc.. and just loads as squares... I have managed to fix some, as I always checked for the files and redirect them if needed.

But alas, not much stuff like Hair.. atlot of stuff I downloaded ended up being refits, or companion files, textures, etc.. o'well :(

  • It sounds as if you are either downloading add-ons without the bases - nissing .dsf files for figures that then load as blcks would be the various Starter Essentials included with DS - or as if the installation is not correct, with the Data folder in a sub-folder of the content directory isntead of in the content directory itself. Are you using the default locations, and are you isntalling with the Install Manager (or with Connect in 4.9)?

  • I think i'm missing the base files, lots I noticed one the other day that was missing files, I went back to the zip.. then back to where i found the file.. and sure enough, it was just support files, but that's not what the topic/file name was.. guess I will have to start reading more.. I just have been pressing download... it's a learning curve I guess, I usually have not experienced needed this or that as I usually use maya or 3dsmax..

  • OK, now I'm upset again lol...

I have been downloading like mad, and I forget what I've even downloaded and put in MyLibrary at times..

but one thing I downloaded I couldn't find at all, so I searched it in the search box, and sure enough it came up...

    the problem is, it says this it's location is .. D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\runtime\Libraries\Character\Mostdigitalcreations\PoliceBadge

and I look in Daz under the folder tabs for, D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\runtime, and I do not have that folder in Daz.. so it's lost?

I start to wonder how much other stuff I've downloaded doesnt even show up in the folder tree's unless I search for it, and it's showing up then, but nowhere I can physically click through the folders find it... it's odd.. too odd.. and very fustrating... it's there something I can do to find out what's all suppose to be somewhere, that is actually nowhere? that sounds funny, but's what is happening..

    thanks.

  • You want My Library under Poser Formats in the Content Library pane, then in that Figures>Mostdigitalcreations.

  • OK found that one, still looking for lots more, that were not in that listing... I had gone through that dir, but guess I must have been looking for something else at the time, now I'm going through it all methodically... even checking through my zip files... I said in one post, I'm at like 12+ gigs of freebie downloads, and whoa.. it's a lot to go through, had hoped it went smoother :(

Note that not all freebie creators are as good at packing up a content .zip file as they are at creating the content itself — there are lots of ways to create a content folder hierarchy that looks about right at first glance, but doesn't work if you install it straight into your live content folder. Most of us have developed the habit of unpacking freebie .zips into a dummy folder on the desktop, then it's easy to give it a quick checkover to see if anything's obviously out of place, e.g. misspelled folder names, or misplaced folders. Once you're done checking, it's easy to merge the dummy folder into your live content.

And for those of us who use a case sensetive file system, making sure that the names of the folders are all in the proper upper/lower case that the rest of our content is in.

  • Hmm, so I have noticed I have misspelled folders, like libaries... will the content still show up, or possibly more content show up if I move all that stuff to say libraries? There's prolly a couple more I could do aswell..

Yes, it will...unless (this is rare, but does sometimes happen) that a particular item needs that misspelled folder.  It usually happens most with textures...and those usually pop up a 'find this' dialog box when loading.

  • I'm weary about messing with them lol, there is just so much that seems out of place.. and I dont know what i'm doing, I could say move stuff where other stuff is.. like I do want all my shaders in the same place,

    I have them here,

    D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\Shaders

    D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\Shader Presets

    D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\Shader Mixer Presets

    D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\Content\Shaders

    D:\Libraries\My Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\Content\Shader Presets

    and that's just shaders lol..

    Props, all ova..

Characters, all over the place, have standard names like genesis, in 3-4 locations..

Poses, all over ... in props, by themselves, in characters/figures, etc..

Which is the best way to organize this stuff, using the make product .. which I didnt like very much cause it would group all sub-dirs into one window and I could tell them item from the materials..

Catagorey? I havent actually messed with, as it seems to hold stuff from the Daz Install Manager, and I dont know if I put stuff in there if it'll start showing up in the smart prop stuffs.. and obviously could be in the wrong catagorey, like gen1 when it works only on gen2, or something like that..

    Am I missing something?

I read what you said about stuff not working, I get that all the time.. and I figure I am just missing the base files, although sometimes they are standalone releases, and I 50% of the time I go grab the missing file from another dir and just put in every folder until it works.. usually .dsf or .obj files.. I have have many problems with texture files too, and yes those are normally easy to find, but alas sometimes I even get missing textures that were not included in the freebie stuff I downloaded.. aggervating..

The case with those shaders...that's because over the years the 'proper' locations have changed...the ones that say Content\Shaders are from the DS3 era.

All of them can most likely be merged in to the My Library\Shader Presets (I think that's the current preferred location).  Other things are bit trickier..

Post a screen shot of the your mapped directories from Edit > Prefernces > Content Library > Content Directory Manager (expand both Daz and Poser formats).

You should not have ...My Library\Content -- anything under that folder named Content needs to be moved up to be directly underneath My Library.

  • Right, the stuff in My Library\Content needs to be directly in My Library as Mike said. If yiou are using Windows just select everything in the Content folder, ctrl-c, then go back to the My Library folder, ctrl-v and when asked if you want to merge folders click Yes.

  • Umm, ok.. couple things stopping me from doing that..

Is there is some alot of stuff in that content folder that doesnt show anything,

ie, that data folder, and that stuff when I open the folder location via explorer I get folders and files for maps / uv's ..

should i be more selective and leave out the folders that seem empty in program? and just move anything that actually shows some sort of content?

  • mjc1016mjc1016 Posts: 15,001

No...that data folder needs to be merged with the data folder in My Library.  The data folder contains the actual mesh data...

Everything in My Library\Content needs to be moved up...like Richard said.

  • alrighty then, I'll go ahead and do that shortly, hopefully things will be better on that front :)
