Sludge figures

Occasionally I create a figure and when I bring him/her into a scene the whole scene slows down to a sludge. You can hardly pose the figure, let alone move it around. It's happened to me with KOO Joshua and Fabrice?  Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

    What is the Viewport SubD level - under Mesh Resolution in the Parameters pane when you have the figure selected?
