CF Files / Dyson

I think I know the answer, but...

if you're not ever going to use Poser, there is NEVER any need to load a CF file, right? This includes the Generation 3 F&M Starters that includes a CF, there is no reason to load those, right?

A PoserCF no - with older content you may come across DAZ StudioCFs, where the main content (the models themselves) are in Poser format and there are separate Daz Studio materials; those you do need. There are also a few Platinum Club items with BryceCFs - those are Bryce scenes desgined to hold the main content when it is sent over from DS, you might want them if you use Bryce.

That's right, but only if the CF is for Poser. Some products are the other way round — the Poser installer is the main one, and the D|S installer is the CF (usually only containing materials presets). So make sure you know what you're looking at before you say "never use any CF".

For older content...if the Poser file is large and Daz file is small, generally you will need both.

If you have questions about a specific product you can ask here in the forums or look over the file list (if it has one) here...

But...but...but, older content (legacy if you will)  yoi'll have a Ps and/or a DS file right?? You need both for DAZ Studio?? And only one (PS) for Poser??

Okay, now my mind is blown. You wouldn't happen to have an example. an item. so I can see?

What I'm asking about is: http://www.daz3d.com/coleraine-hair for example- a Dyson File. I'm thinking I don't need that Dyson file, but the other thing you said. If I have both a PS & DS, I have to install both just for DS4??

If it's labeled CF (e.g. PoserCF, StudioCF), then it's not stand-alone and you need the other version as well.  If they're labeled DS and Ps you only need one.

    Ah Thank You!

Now I see what Kitty was talking about. Since I used to use Poser exclusively, I didn't realize that certain DAZ Studio items had CF files too, I'm not going to install the Dyson CF's though, as I won't ever be going back to it. They come out with an update after 2 years, and the biggest exciting improvemant is that black solid outlines on your cartoon renders can be made thicker or thiner. The Library is still as screwy as it was in 2003.

So with old content where this might exist, how does one know that you have to install both. The readMe, yes, but is there a visual indication just by looking at the top folders of the installers in the package?

  • Oh, I see. I never noticed that in DIM before. Duh.

So for an example I have Aslan Ds and Ps installed, then I can uninstall the Ps version? That goes for any Ps, no exception?

As long as the DS version is not a StudioCF, yes (unless the fies are named incorrectly, but the few I've reported have been fixed).
