I NEED HELP - How to use the Oso Dog Fur for Daz Dog 8 from Daz Store?

I NEED HELP! I have spend two days trying to get Oso Dog Fur for Daz Dog 8 product to work with no results! I have not idea what the hell I am doing! I am super frustrated!

I did find the steps that come with the product but what the hell do they mean? I am not familiar with the terminology. You would think when buying a product it comes with clear and simple instructions. I would expect catogeries telling me what to select what in what order. I am not a computer nerd. It is not user friendly at all.

Steps:

Apply a dog texture to the figure. Check what UV is being used.
Apply a preset to Adjust Gloss for the appropriate UV (so the skin underneath the fur is matte and blends in well)
Add dog fur.
Apply the correct Fur UV preset to the fur (to set proper hair scale and hair density maps)
Select the Surfaces Coat, InnerEar, Nose.
Place the coat image map into Root Transmission Color, Tip Transmission Color, Hair Root Color, and Hair Tip Color on those surfaces.
Apply fur scale, density, and other presets as desired, and enjoy!

    - Check UV means determining the breed of the dog, default Dog 8 ? Husky ? French Bull ? etc.  Then apply the "... Adjust Gloss" Material preset onto the dog accordingly. The example is French Bulldog in screenshot1.

    - Load the fur to the dog, and apply French Bulldog's Fur Material preset. Done. screenshots 2 ~ 3.

Ok, whew... there's some weirdnesses about dogs that complicate this, and I apologize for this being one of your early product experiences, heh!

So a UV map is a map that connects a 2d image with a 3d model. The model mesh is essentially flattened out. This way, you can have an image of, say, fur and fur patterns, and each pixel is correspondingly placed on the 3d shape.

The problem with dogs is, of course, that dogs vary wildly in shape. So a map that works for a french bulldog wouldn't have enough space for the ears of a basset hound; the ears would look low resolution (because the space set aside for the ears would have to cover a much bigger space).

Ok, now once you apply a skin texture to a dog, it will automatically set the UV to the appropriate type.

If you select the figure, look for the Surfaces tab. That contains all the surfaces and the various parts of the surface (Base Color, Glossy Color, etc.). One of the entries is for UV Set (there is a text box at the top to enter in a filter, so if you type some part of 'UV set' in the box it will narrow down the listed entries)

That will tell you which uv set is being used, and so which settings to use on the fur.

Adjust gloss on the skin makes the skin not shine through the fur. Normally, a dog skin texture is tweaked to look good by itself. With fur over it, that would look weird.

'Select the Surfaces Coat, InnerEar, Nose.
Place the coat image map into Root Transmission Color, Tip Transmission Color, Hair Root Color, and Hair Tip Color on those surfaces'

Basically, select everything on the fur, and place the dog's coat texture image on all that stuff to get the fur to look like the dog coat.

So the dog's regular coat image is placed on the colors of the fur.

  • @crosswind @Oso3D I followed both of your instructions and got this(Please see screenshots). The outcome seems correct but it isn't my intended outcome. I want to decrease the distance between each hair strand(make the hair denser), look furry like a real dog or to be exact, how do I make it look like the Daz Dog 8 with fur in the screenshot advertised on the product page?(I have attached the screenshot from the store)

I did play around with the other settings but I couldn't get it to look like dog with fur from the daz store screenshot.

Aaah! You need to render it; by default, the working model only displays guide hairs (so that your machine runs faster), and only shows the final result once rendered.

Alternately you can select the hair and go to the parameter Simulation/Preview PR Hairs and click it from Off to On.

Note that this will slow things down a bit. If you have a fast machine this might not be a problem.

  • crosswind I have the Daz Dog 8 and The Chihuahua Mega-Bundle for Daz Dog 8.

I would like to have the Matese Terrier Dog look, How can I get that?

  • @Oso3D @crosswind Thank you both very much for your help and being patient with me. @Oso3D I managed to render it and it looks excellent (render attached if you want to see). Adding fur makes the dog look much better and realistic. I am very happy now!

Ah ~~ I don't know if a Chihuahua has a similar head / body shape as a Maltese if removing furs on them, haha ~ But what I know is that you can always sculpt the shape of Chihuahua to make it looks like a Maltese first of all. Then tweak the settings of the furs whatever they're LAMH or dForce one (included in Chihuahua's Bundle)...  http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/81808/start

But if making a Maltese with very long fur, I think that'll be challenging in terms of techniques...even if you may make strand-based hair with SBH Editor... IMHO

  • crosswind I had a Maltese Terrier dog, my little friend lived 15 years.

I want to do a render of this kind of animal.

The link page does not say much.

Sculpt the shape of the Chihuahua to make it look like a Maltese? huh, I am not ready to use Blender yet

I'm so happy for you! Whew!

I was a bit nervous because it's a bit of a convoluted product, and for someone just starting out... eep.
