He doesn't have his own thread yet - assuming everyone is waiting for a banner

Opps, posted a bit quick

Link to character: https://www.daz3d.com/thomas-9

Reminds a bit of Leonardo DiCaprio crossed with Chris Hemsworth.

His bundles - too much editorial content for me to risk.

I'll try post some renders later. He seems to pose well apart from biceps I'm not 100% on. He comes with a beard!

Google the tv shows Reacher or more specifically Hawk on the Max series, Titans.

Hmm I'm not keen on his shoulders, kind of reminds me of the old Michael 3 in the shoulder and there is a crease under the shoulders that keeps catching my eye. I'm gonna pass on this for now.

Yep, i've been waiting on a banner or something besides the basic discounts. I was excited about the executive suit at first... then I looked at the promos and it appears to be made of play-doh rather than cloth.  Also thought it was weird that they made seperate add-on sets for likenesses to famous costumes & props, but never mentioned that the Cryptid Heroe's base costume itself is a lift from that of The Tick's sidekick, The Moth.  (And seriously, if you're going to include a Batgirl add-on, why not add a Catwoman variant for the mask as well?  Finally, in the "real anatomy should not mirror Barbie" category, Thomas comes with a beard but like "Ken" he doesn't have any other body hair? Weird choice...

How does the likeness to real, active celebrities pan out in a commercial product though? I use these models for game development and the character face morphs are unusable or I would be charging money for a game with characters played by the likeness of john cena, tim hiddleston, and this guy. One similar likeness is an easter egg joke. A whole cast of lookalikes is a bargain bin rip off product. It's not a good look for my reputation. Same goes for the costumes that"just" different enough from an existing design to allow an interactive license to be sold. I cant keep up with every piece of fictional clothing and likeness ever so some purchase confidence would be preferred.

That's the thing, DAZ's primary clientale isn't game developers. Interactive licenses and bridges to game engines wasn't even a thing until recently and probably just an afterthought since more and more stopped actually creating what they needed in their game from scratch like they used to. Likenesses to real world people has been popular around here for quite awhile, but only recently has DAZ jumped on the fan art wagon.

As I pointed out though, there are a million morphs that can change any figure into something else. Just think of character releases as genes for the gene pool and create who you want. I would think as a wannabe game developer you would never purchase a set chartacter and op for creating your own for your specific uses in your game anyway. I don't see a difference in users playing your game seeing an Alan Ritchson lookalike or a Victoria 9 look alike.

Which is a major reason why I can't wrap my head around a blanket end-user editorial license when it comes to some of the things that Daz sells. I get that it protects Daz somewhat, but if an end-user decides to put celeb likenesses into their commercial products, that's 100% on them and should be. Yet if a different end-user creates an entirely new something that includes, but is completely unrecognisable as, an editorial product, that's a problem under the license terms. Daz can't protect the first group of end-users with editorial licensing and they only disincentive the second.

I don't mind celebrity lookalikes every so often.  We have some artists on here that are specifically known for that, and that's okay because it's their niche.

The DA products are supposed to be of the highest quality when it comes to characters. We've seen a lot of potential, but with so many lookalikes lately it's disappointing when the last 3 major bundles are hollywood or politics influenced.  I have no intention of getting any of them based on the limited usage.

The difference is it isn't clearly marked as a lookalike character. My game in particular, the one I'm working on now at least, uses character customization through sliders that affect the blendmorphs. So it's possible for a character to use just one of the "genes", and very obvious that you're sliding between John Cena and Tom Hiddleston.

If they called it an Alan Richardson lookalike character, I'd know in advance and could avoid it. No hate for it being on the store - people who want that should be entitled to it.

They can't call it Alan Richardson though because that would be a legal infringement. All they're doing is passing that hot potato on to the end user who is not necessarily aware of every actor or copyrighted costume and will inevitably end up putting some of it in their product.

Also as an aside, calling game developers "wannabes" for using purchased art assets is rather short sighted, even big studios like Square have been known to include publicly available asset content in their games.

I guess legally it could be used in a game if you have the interactive license, just as it is here at DAZ 3D for sale. While "Reacher's" likeness might move units at DAZ, it won't move units in a video game.

if you are in game development you could surely at least dial spin a combination of characters and not just use Thomas 9 or any other character as is? Like.......I mean.....is that what devs are doing? surely 20% thomas, 30%, 20%,40 % of multiple characters would make someone that wouldnt look like an actor; especially if you change textures and every other detail.

I get being worried about costume copyright, but character likeness is wild to me especially with how much you can customize these characters lol.

the more realistic you get the more you have to use real life inspiration; most games unless immensely stylized use celebrities and actors to populate their cast.

These are great. He looks good both shaved down and with not a hair our of place (how did he manage that, midgard? :D)

I've enjoyed playing around with him. In the promo's I was worried the sculpt was too symmetrical and the abs too cartoony, but in practice it hasn't been much of an issue. I think the promo lighting and A pose just weren't doing him any favours. I liked the big traps :)

I wish he didn't look so dour, but that's something I could say about a lot of the male characters.

I'd love for my first impression of a new G9 male to be "wow, he has really kind eyes."

I thought I would find an image of the actor smiling for you if want to replicate the pose:

Rarey have I seen such a concerted effort to smile. It's probably the 1000th time that day he was asked to do so.
