They are structurally similar to .duf files -- prior to DS4.5 they were used for both the hidden data files and the user-facing files, starting in 4.5 .dsf is just used for the hidden file and .duf for the user-facing files. So treat them as if they're .duf files.
Although of course, if they are hidden data files, you're not supposed to be able to apply them manually, or even see them in your Content Library. What are these mystery files, what other files came with them, and what sort of folder structure did you get them in?
It is Raiya's 'Asian faces', I used dm to install them and then as I tried to apply them I couldn't find them in content. Found them by digging around and moved them so I could see them but they still won't apply. Then, I got curious as to what a .dsf actually is and found it difficult to get an answer on my own so came here.
I thought I was getting morphs I could apply to genesis characters but that doesn't seem to be the case which means I've either got the wrong end of the stick or; I'm not doing the right thing...
If you couldn't see them they were probably in the data folder, in which case moving them will have broken the product. If you have something with only .dsf files in the data folder it's probably a morph set, or alternative UVs or the like, that loads automatically with the figure and is accessed through the Parameters pane, or Surfaces pane for UVs, or as an option in AutoFit/Transfer Utility for clones or projection templates.
Thank you Mr Haseltine, that's where I was going wrong and I've now found and used them as they were as you said, found as morphing sliders in the character parameters.

Yes, that's how you broke them; see above about "hidden data files".

Almost, but the "not quite" in this case is a vitally important one — you got morphs that were already applied to your Genesis characters the moment you installed them. These morphs don't appear in your content library for clicking on, they appear directly in your Genesis character's parameter dials, and you turn them on (or off) by changing the parameter value.
Note that some of these items will start full on, and some will start full off. There's a reason for that; when you install a character, you want it to be applied right away when you add that character to your scene. When you install a set of expressions, you don't want them all 100% on at once, the results will literally not be pretty...

As Mike said, older content (4.x<5) may be in .dsf format, but it does sound as if the data folder has perhaps ended up in the wrong place.
