Can rendering be done ready for 3-D printing?

I am totally new to this software.

I am overwhelmed by what it can do.

Once the figures are created, what do I have to do to get a file that can be printed by 3-D printer?

Can rendering be done in a format ready for 3-D printing?

  • Which figures? Some of the recent ones have "GeoGrafts" that fit to the figure to make it watertight, though you will probably need to do some editing of the mesh to make clothing or hair printable as I understand the requirements.

I got a small figure of a dragon on a pedestal set up in DAZ, and exported it as an .obj file.  It was just a test run, so we didn't need materials because our printer at school only prints 1 color at a time.  I had to set it up in Autodesk's 123D Design and Meshmixer.

There were a few problems to overcome.  The head ended up detached from the body, and the whole figure was rotated 90 degrees. But after working through those, it finally printed.  The quality wasn't that great.  We didn't print at the highest resolution.  It still took 4-5 hours to finish.

The wings were a problem.  They were originally out too far in a flying position.  The printer resorts to making supports which have to be removed later.  We damaged the figure removing the supports.  I plan to have the wings more over the body (see attached image) next time we try it.
