I'm holding out for the next version of thunderbolt, which will officially support external GPUs. Right now I've got a older Mac Pro with a GTX 980 which will hold me for a while. Another option is using Iray Server on Linux if it ever becomes viable. I've also considered building a Hackintosh. I'd likely move back to LuxRender rather than use Windows.
For me the Apple times are over. Back in the 90s and 2000s Win was made for ppl who had a lot time or fun to repair something that don't work but since a few years the Win stuff works like Apple. The GUI looks still tasteless and cheap but as long i look to my Adobe GUIs or other nice Software its fine though.
Luckily the 27" iMac i use is the biggest and fastest that was available and the MacBook Pro 17" is the same. Both are configurated with 1 TB SSD and i think they will work fine for 2016. We will see what will come :-D
