I don't know how to use the direction and light profiles in the shader mixer.

I am in the process of learning to use a shader mixer. I was wondering about the direction and light profile bricks in it.
I was wondering if I could get the direction vector that the object is currently facing for the direction, but it always seems to point to (0,0,0).
I thought the light profile could get the light shining on the material, but I don't know how to connect it to the output LP.
I am having a hard time with the lack of documentation. If anyone knows how to do this, please let me know.
