How do I place multiple characters in the same scene?

Help requested please.  I have set up a few characters in DS 4.8, using Daz and third party content and all based on V4 and M4.  Each time I have a new character to my liking (hair, eyes etc.) I save it as a scene.

Now I want to use two or more of these ‘customised’ characters together in new scenes, and I cannot work out how get more than one character into the same scene.  I can find nothing in the manual or on You Tube.  I tried File/Merge and that gave me two characters inextricably combined….amusing, but not much use.   Can someone please direct me to a tutorial or give me a few steps to achieve this?

Many thanks.

Open each scene and re-save the characters as subsets, then you can load them into a new scene.

Edit: When you say "inextricably combined" Do you mean they load to the same place?

I just tried merging two scene files and had no problem using parameters to shift them apart. Just like loading any two items in one spot.

    Edit: Using Genesis 2 & 3 in DS 4.7

if I understand correctly what you want to do, with the character you want to add to the scene, like you have already,  select merge, but don't have the character already selected that is already in the scene, are the characters just stacked into each other ? if so , then it's just a matter of transit one to the left or the right or forwaed or back

I still use 4.6, not long ago that all I had to do, but now for some strange reason I now need to make sure the first character is not selected, if they are, I end up with the morphs from the character I am merging now added to the already existing character.

At one time I never had to use the merge, just click on the character I wanted to add without any extra steps.

it is possible that may not work in 4.8, I don't know, but you can try that

UNselect character already in scene, then click or add(merge) the new character

  • Thanks guys,  I have tried these tips now (either or both as subsets, unselect first character before merging the second) but still have the same problem.

well dang . . guess you'll need someone with 4.8 experience, I didn't think there would had been any difference for this problem
I always save characters as scene,  but I'm getting the impression you had done that already, I tried subset, and things just didn't come back right for me, but that's me I tend to be unorthodox

Have you tried "drag and dropping" the .duf files from your DAZ3D>My Liibrary>Scenes folder?

    I can do that in 4.7 & 4.9 with no issues. Unfortunately I never used 4.8 but if it works in 4.7 and 4.9 ..... . . .

Edit: Used M4 and SF4 this time.

  • Tried the drag and drop approach Packmaster, but no success

  • Just for fun, you can try hiding the first charcter by unchecking the eye symbol and then load the second one.

Thanks Tako - tried it but no success :(

Is there any way that you are "fitting" the second character onto the first?

That's the only way I can get close to the results you describe.

Anyway - hopefully a DS expert will show up and nut this one out for you :-)

  • Well, I experimented with Gen4 then Genesis adn Genssis 2 and they all react differsntly.  By accident I found that on Gen 4 I could click and drag to separate the two base characters I loaded.  They still retain some links, but I can then merge preset, subset and .duf files, and have limited manouverability of the resulting characters.

Will now continue my learning journey.  Thanks for all the supportive advice.

This is a "just in case" not an attempt at an insult but you can use the Translate Tool (or the Universal Tool) to move stuff around.

Highlight the arrow head for the direction you want to go and drag.

Also the xyz translate dials in the parameters tab do the same thing.

  • Packmaster, R25S - thanks for the extra advice.  I will look into these as I feel that my current approach is workable but not ideal.

    Cheers,
