Adding Smoke And Mist to Iray Renders

I have some pro features that allow me to add smoke and mist to a render.  I really never have got them to work very well.  Are there some numbers that I can just plug in every time to get successful results?  So far I was better over-exposing and altering contrast in photoshop to add the kind of light you get from long distances photographically, and to a lesser extent visually.  I would like to add white clouds successfully but am lost on the settings.  I am hoping that maybe someone who reads this knows where I can find this info easily without hours of renders and re-renders to sort it out.

It depends what effect you're looking to achieve, Marshian's AtmoCam is really good for iRay mist and atmosphere and then there is Jepes Steamz which can be adapted to be very effective in iRay. For clouds though, generally a decent HDRI map used for lighting like Skies of iRadiance are good and I've read somewhere there are some cloud props with one of stonemasons products that people are using very effectively.

I recommend to do stuff like this in post production.

If you create a still image i would use Photoshop, for movies After Effects is awesome.

In 3D Software directly - of course in some way it can work and there are some nice tools - but its way too much trial and error / test renderings / adjustments.

The way i do this fog thingy is:

Create a layer with clouds made from black and white - then gaussian blur it. Layer set: Subtract - %x

The duplicate this new layer and scale it up a bit. Find new %

... and so on ... as long it fits :-D
