Changing Daz library to a Hard Drive

I am running out of space on my hard drive and would ike to move my daz library to a external drive.  How would I go about doing that and how do I get it to work again?

  • How did you install? If you sued DIM, and didn't delete the zips, it would be simplest to uninstall and reinstall (otherwise any time you do an update it will be placed in the old location, unless you batch edit all of the manifests).

  • Thanks.  I used.  DIM.  How do I change the location in DIM?

  • Click the gear icon at top-right, then go to the Installation tab and click the + button at bottom-left to add a new directory. Set Current to the new directory (you can also change which directory is used by clicking the Details check box in the main interface).

  • Thanks.  I have done that but my daz though reinstalled is showing no info so that I can select images, models etc.   Have done data base maintence.  How do I point Daz to new directory to show the images and smart content?

    thanks

  • Is DS (assuming that's what you mean by Daz) set to use the folder you installed to as a content diectory?

I've had to do this several times -- three computers, all of them sharing three content libraries: one on my primary machine, another on a network share, and yet another on an external USB drive that I carry with whatever computer I'm "out and about" with.

If you select the 'Content Library' tab, then open the context menu (located in the upper-right corner of the pane -- it looks like four horizontal lines with a tiny arrow), you'll find an option 'Content Directory Manager'.  Select that, and use the dialog that is displayed to define the new directories, the ones that you've moved your content to.

One good thing about DAZ Studio is that, once you've told it where your content is, it remembers; even if, like me, you've added additional, occasionally-offline, paths.  DAZ Studio will use the directories it can find, and won't complain about any others that might not be available on any given occasion.  (Other 3D products, which I shall not name, aren't that smart.)

One thing you'll probably need to do when you do change the location of your content (after updating the locations using the 'Content Directory Management' procedure, described above) is to re-run the 'Re-Import Metadata' option (from the 'Content DB Maintenance...' menu option).  One advisory, though: if you have a positively horrendous amount of content (as many of us do), this is liable to take rather a long time...!

  • Thank you!  All sorted.  Took ages but now I have lots of space on my computer!

    Hi Ken,

Many thanks for this - I am a new user, using 4.8, and I have also been trying to work out how to move my Content Library to an external hard drive.  I have copied my Daz 3D library to my external hard drive.  I then followed your instructions. When I open the drop down menu and click on 'Content Directory Manager' it will allow me to create a new content set via the first tab on the list, but this is the only tab that is activated and I cannot see how the new content set will achieve the desired result.  None of the other tabs are activated, including the tab for 'Add' under 'Directory:'.

I tried the "search hard drive for files" tab on the drop down menu, but that just finds the individual files for me and I do not think I can use it to map a path to my external hard drive.

Grateful for any help you can provide!

When you click on "DAZ Studio Formats" or "Poser Formats" then the Add button becomes active.

You don't need to create a new content set, all that's needed is to add the new folder path to both D|S Format and Poser Format sections of the existing content set.

  • Thanks Mike and Kitty, I did this and it is now working well off my external hard drive!
