I went to the iray render settings > general and selected "never" for the auto-headlamp, but then when I created a new camera, the damn headlamp was still set to "auto"
If you have it switched off in Iray, it wont matter what it is set to in the Parameters pane. I leave it switched off for rendering as I would never want to use the headlamp anyway, but it is useful for setting up scenes.

And if you want to toggle it on, it's CTRL+L (if your viewport is totally dark and your stuff is playing peek a boo with you in total darkness) And as said, if in Render Settings you have it off, you don't have to turn it off in the viewport. At least I think that's right.
Presumably they will get rid of the auto headlamp in the next version of Studio as nobody really likes it and it serves no useful purpose.
That would be nice; I know there are valid uses for a camera Headlamp, but the way it's been implemented in the last couple of versions just doesn't seem to mesh well with the way a lot of people work. Hardly a week goes by without at least one post here with some problem or other that's solvable with a simple "turn off the Headlamp".
When they first added the feature that turned it off by just adding a light, I thought it was great...until I realized most of the lights I use DON'T turn it off...area lights, non-Daz 'shader' lights. And now there's even more light types...and I'm not sure exactly what triggers it.
The headlamp's been an issue since the pre-release beta builds of DS3, shader based lights don't turn it off, that's why all of Omnifreaker's UberArea lights load in a headlamp blocker, doesn't work in the Open GL viewport, but both 3Delight and Iray will turn off the headlamp if one of those blockers is in the scene regardless of your settings.

That wont make any difference if you have it switched off in Iray.
ok, so the "Auto" means (do whatever the user has selected in general render settings)?
