Problem getting new material to apply...

I'm trying to learn how to make new materials for clothing items. I used the template provided with the clothing item to make a texture file, and saved it as both a .psd file and a .jpg file.

Next, I go into DS4.9, load in V4, and add the clothing item. Then I go into the Surfaces tab, and make sure the clothing item is selected there. This is a simple item, with just two material zones. I click on the little box to the left of Base Color, and Browse to select my custom texture file. But when I click Open, nothing happens. The existing texture remains in place.

Am I doing something wrong?

Where are you seeing 'Base Color'?   If you have created a new map for this item, it should be applied to the 'Diffuse' colour area.   Is that what you are doing?    That is generally all that you need to do, use the Browse to find your new texture and it will apply.

What is the name of this V4 clothing item, I may have it and it would be easier to help you.

@JimmyC_2009 Base Color is an Iray surface setting. RLSprouse_ab199073ad It sounds like you are doing it correctly. Does the little icon next to Base Color change to look like your texture? In the Surfaces pane menu, have you checked the option to automatically refresh textures? If not, try Ctrl-I to refresh them.

The particular item I am working on is the Sugar Jamaz set by RPublishing and Rhiannon, over on Rendo. I am using it with V4 rather than something newer, because I am trying to follow Sveva's Texturing for Beginner's tutorial, but trying to apply it to DAZ Studio rather than Poser.

@barbult: I do have the Automatically Refresh Images option checked, is that what you mean? No, the little icon next to Base Color does not change.

Any other ideas? In general, should I use the .jpg version or the .psd version of textures applied in this way? (I've tried both.)

I think either the jpg or psd file should work. I've used both file types with success. I'm not sure what all the requirements are. Start simple with an 8 bit RGB JPEG image.

You should only have to click on the little square icon next to the Base Color, select Browse..., navigate to your folder with the image, select it and click Open. The little icon should definitely change to show a tiny view of the image you selected.

  • But it does not. This is infuriating. No error message, no clue why it doesn't work as it should.

Post some screenshots of your surface settings. Maybe that will offer a clue.

Oh, just a thought - are you sure your clothing is UV mapped? Does the original texture use an image that shows in the little icon box?

What happens if you click the icon box and select "None" instead of "Browse...". Does the original texture icon go blank and the clothing in the viewport lose it texture? If so, can you then browse for your new texture and load it? Or can you reload the original texture map? Can you load any image, maybe some randomly selected JPEG image?

I'm just looking for clues here, because I've never seen this happen like you described.

  • Okay, I have had a breakthrough. I found that if I drag the texture file onto the Base Color item, it attaches. It doesn't explain why the Browse feature doesn't work, but at least I can proceed with my studies.

Thanks for your attempts to help!

I am having exactly the same issue. I can`t load image files in the surfaces tab, so definitely something is going on.

Thanks a lot for suggesting the drag and drop option, I would have never thought about it and it will do in the meantime, but it is an annoying issue. I`m really not sure how to narrow it down, the only recent thing I did was installing "Iray Smart Converter and Advanced Skin Managers for Genesis 2", which I`m not blaming and actually encourage everyone reading this to buy because it`s like the most amazing thing ever and can`t live without it anymore, but since its the only thing I`ve done and it`s surfaces related I thought it would be worth to mention, still, I think it was released after your first post, so I doubt it`s related.

In my case, textures load fine from a DAZ Studio file, I can apply the ones already loaded in the scene caché, but browsing and loading results in nothing.

I`m using DAZ Studio 4.9.054 on El Capitán.

  • I'm also a Mac user, so I am wondering if it is a Mac-only glitch.

If it helps I am using windows and 4.8 and it works on both my laptop and my pc.  I have no idea what I am doing usually so I can't imagine its user error if it works for me lol.
