Why won't my layout stay as I want it?

Every time I open Studio, I have to recustomise the toolbars along the top! It's driving me crazy! Why won't it remember what I do each time? I have even tried saving the layout?

Aaagghh!!!

If you saved it, does it actually save your customizations  If you reload the saved layout?

no.. But I shouldn't have to save it as a named layout anyway should i? Isn't it supposed to just remember your customizations anyway?

It should remember the last state...

And if it isn't doing saved ones, too...then there's something deeper wrong.  What OS?  How did you install and did you use the default locations?

    Win8 and yes, normal locations

There's a chance that DS is not closing correctly,  Close Studio and then look at the end of the log file (it will be in something like users/your user account/Application Data/DAZ 3D/Studio4).

There should be something at the end about Studio exiting.

If it's cleanly exiting, then the next thing to start checking would be permissions.

Ok, I launched DAZ Studio, cleared the log file, then exited DAZ Studio. Here's the contents of the log file. It looks like it's exiting ok.

Can you maybe tell me where it stores the layout setting info so I can edit it manually?

They should be in the same folder as the log file...but if the log is updating then it should be writing the  layout files, too.

    Ah, is that "layout.dsx"?

That's the default.  There should be some user files/folders in there too.

well, it's writing a new copy of "layout.dsx" each time I exit (as I checked the timestamp). But it seems to still load up with the toolbar unchanged each time. It's as if it's not reading layout.dsx each time it opens

    Is there a toolbars.dsx?

There should be a toolbars, menus and a couple of others, in addition to the layouts.dsx.  They all need to be read/write...make sure none of them are set to read only or anything.  Also, as a user, you need to have write permissions to that folder (you should if it is actually writing a new copy, on exit).

yes, there's a toolbars, actions, customactions as well. All of them were re-written at the last close. So why ain't they being read on opening Studio?!

  • Try deleting the toolbar file, if that's the oen that's problematic (well, move it to a safe location), then launch DS, amke at least one change to the toolbar, exit and see if the change has stuck.

  • ok, I did that and I think it's ok now. Thanks for your help all!
