SSS in iray

Can anyone point me to any good information on how to get SSS working in iray? I have loaded the iray materials for genesis 3, but the SSS effect is not really very visible. What's the best way of boosting it? Would it be by dialling up "SSS Amount" from 1.0 (the default setting)? if so, how high does that value go?

Thanks

    That's a complicated question.

There are multiple things that affect that.

I think you need to explain what effect you are trying to achieve, specifically, before someone could give you a succinct answer.

    Ok, fair point.

I guess what I am trying to achieve is that slightly translucent look that skins have in close-up (I don't really worry about SSS for long shots, only portraits). But I am new to iray and not yet confident about the very many parameters in the iray shaders and what they all do. What I am finding with the Genesis 3 iRay skins 'out of the box' is that they still look quite plastic and don't really seem to have that 'glow beneath the surface' or the look of an ear lit by a rear rim light which shows the light through slightly.

try just swapping the sss direction from negative to positive. Thats a good place to start (thank jag11 for this tidbit).

Check out the above thread for some in-depth discussions, things start to get really, really interesting around page 35, with some really good settings from Jag11 on page 39.

  • Also consider updating to the Daz Studio v4.9 beta as it handles SSS and translucency much better due to a bug fix.
