So I'm learning Rigging.... (and I'm stuck on weight mapping)

So today I decided after much conflict I should learn rigging. Someone made me a bird-creature and I am trying to rig it in DAZ. Since I know nothing about rigging at all, I went ahead and bought blondie's "Rigging your own figures" (or something close to that).

However I am stuck on an area that doesn't seem explained, or maybe it was how my bird was made (in Blender). I went ahead and assigned different groups to various body parts, put the bones and place and moved onto weight mapping. Now in the tutorial she chooses the figure and it turns all red, but then it turns blue for having no weight influence.

Instead, for me, not only does the whole figure not turn red (only parts do) but every part I select is red instead... and I am totally stuck on what to do from here; I mean, I cannot paint a map that is all red already, yes? I'm not seeing blue anywhere, and I can also tell that the tutorial was made on an earlier version of Studio because the menus and some names are different.

I hope someone can help  >.>

This tutorial may provide some information.

There are also previous parts dealing with setting up groups and a few other things, that you may want to go over, on YouTube.

  • Thank you! I will check it out!!

I did set my own groups, I wondered if I messed up on something though. Probably LOL.

I'm afraid I am stuck on the same problem. There doesn't seem to be a way to take off what is already there? I mean, all the body parts are showing red, and I still cannot get them blue. And that tutorial doesn't explain how to do it.

BUT, I did do this: I selected a single wing, deleted all the listed weight maps, and then from the Unused Menu, put in the X Rotation. Hit "Add Map." It didn't turn blue, but when I left click and drag on the wing, it turns red.

Does this mean I'm doing it right, but for some reason no blue shows up anymore?

Edit: I painted part of the wing on the X rotation. Please reference below--how come the whole wing isn't following the bend? If I paint the entire wing, it gets horribly distorted. And as you can see there is no blue anywhere.

Oops, I forgot to verify something!

As I said before, before I removed the maps on the wing, the whole thing was red when I moved it. Oddly this DOES move the whole wing.

Yesterday I put together this picture, and this of course is with no weight mapping at atll:

I guess the bones move just fine without my doing weight mapping, but I know I need to do it to make the joints bend better. Below, is the creature with just bones; I did not touch the weight maps here... at least I don't think I did. I bent the wings to illustrate what's happening there now.

So now, I just don't know where to go from here; am I missing something? What do I need to do next? Thanks for any help!

I am still stuck on this same problem. Decided to come back to do rigging, this time on an orca figure.

Did DAZ change how it displays what is red or not? Because I never see blue anywhere... I only see my figure as gray, and the whole part I'm trying to edit as red (after selecting polygons and right clicking--> fill selected). So is it okay/normal I'm not seeing ANY blue?

Also, no tutorial goes over how you can change from all filled in red to making that red section smaller. I rather do that than expand the selection.

See, basically, any smoothing I do makes the selection completely red; there is no fading into grey/gray ... because there is no blue. And the sensitivity of the smoothing brush does this even set as low as 0.019

Below I'm including a picture. The left-most is the original "fill selection" on the X-rotation weight map. The two on the right shows what happens when I apply the same low smoothing values, both with and without the "restrict influence" box checked.
