cannot turn off background lighting

Hi.

I cannot seem to render a scene with the background llighting being on. In preview with a single light and no head  lamp looks good. Then when rendered  the background light is on and all is universally illuminated. What am I doing wrong?

    If you are using Iray, go to the Render Settings pane and make sure it is set to Scene only instead of Dome and Scene in the Environment group. You will probably then  need to adjust the Tone Mapping options to account for the lower light level without the dome.

    Thanks. This was driving me nuts.Now I have to grapple with tone mapping :) whatever that is.

    Tone Mapping is real world camera related settings so best to Google it. :)
