Terrible render performance after Nvidia driver update

I'm still using 4.21 for my main Daz instance but am testing the beta build of 4.22. I ran into some issues in 4.22 and it seemed reasonable to start with a driver update.

I have an RTX 3090 and was using the 526.98 driver. I downloaded the last couple of studio drivers that were available at Nvidia (546.01 and 537.58). I started by updating to the newest and the first thing I did after updating the driver was do a sanity test in 4.21, in which I opened up the last scene I had rendered and saved and rendered it again, just as it was saved. The final render looked similar to the one from two days ago, but it literally took twice as long with the updated driver - two days ago, it took 13 minutes, 43 seconds with 526.98 and tonight, it took 26 minutes and 19 seconds with 546.01. I wouldn't sweat a small difference, but that's insane. It turns out that I can't even actually test the scene in 4.22, because I found out that ground fog doesn't work like it did in 4.21; I have to modify the scene in order to get it to render not-almost-black, but that's a different matter.

I then repeated the test with 537.58. The same scene came in two minutes faster at 24 minutes, but that's still crazy-slow compared to the previous driver. I've since found that the main problem that was annoying me in 4.22 is probably due to a config setting I'd initially overlooked, so I'm seriously considering going back to 526.98.

Ideas? I saw a thread from a couple of weeks ago in which someone said they saw great performance improved updating drivers.

Please try to use the Studio driver. I think the default download is Game.

  • Updating drivrs past the minimum version listed isn't guaranteed to be an improvement, though the Studio drivers should be fairly safe.
