Daz House Cat crashes Iray (nothing but the cat) - 16GB of VRAM

I spent about four hours making a scene today featured around the daz house cat which I picked up during the black friday sale, along with several pose packs for it.  Probably spent somewhere between $25 and $30.  The scene continually failed to render, completely locking up and finally crashing Daz Studio every time.  At first I didn't think too much about it, reloaded the scene and started to delete objects etc.  I tried to render again with the same result.  This went on for some time before I finally went to go look at the logfile to see what was happening, and then I systematically began running renders on individual things to confirm.

My (human) actor rendered just fine, by herself, in 8k.  My scene + (human) actor rendered just fine, in 8k.

The Daz Housecat does not render at all.  Even by itself with absolutely nothing else in the scene, it will not render.  Here are some snippets of my failures to render this cat:

I have an i5 at 3GHz, 16GB of system RAM, and an nVidia 4060ti RTX (16GB version).  This slow yet simple setup has given me beautiful full UHD 8k renders on outdoor scenes packed with trees, foilage, and as many as 5 actors at once without crashing (insanely long render times is my only complaint).

So why can't I render a cat?

Thanks for advice/info.

My instant response is 'Insufficient System RAM'. I suggest you run it once more with task manager running and look at RAM usage. Ideally you need 3x system RAM to GPU ram, so your system looks a bit unbalanced for DS. DS doesn't seem to like it when the system RAM fills and the OS pages memory onto HDD, and frequently dies. I had a Win7 system that crashed a few times at 16Gb RAM when rendering, then when upped to 24Gb it had fewer problems less frequently. Regards, Richard.

  • Sorry, didn't answer 'Why the cat?'. The cat uses strand based hair for the fur, and with hundreds, maybe thousands of strands per square cm, that eats RAM like it's going out of fashion. Regards, Richard.

Reduce your subD levels of the cat and the fur.

    Thanks.

I do have the parts in transit now to build an entire new PC.  My laptop couldn't handle Daz Studio so I dropped a 4060ti into an older desktop I had laying around.  But it's so old I ordered everything I need to build a new one and a second 4060ti to speed up rendering a bit.  I haven't encountered any memory issues until now even running the 16/16 setup.  Kinda mind blown that cat can use that many resources.  Well, here's to hoping 64GB of RAM and 2x 4060ti's will have better luck with it.  smiley

More RAM is good. The recommendation is 2-3 times VRAM.

Just be aware that 2 4060ti will not be able to handle larger scenes than 1. The scene has to fit in one card to get it to render. WIth 2 cards it will just go twice as fast.

Producing huge renders (8K) is also a quick way to eat through memory. It's best to render smaller and resize afterwards in Photoshop etc.

Sweet victory tastes good.  This isn't the scene I had been working on, but I finally got the cat to render lol.  This is after partially building the new pc, still waiting on some late arrivals (more RAM and one of the GPUs is still not here).  Compressed the 8k image down to just 2.76mb - rendered on the single 4060ti.  Although I doubt the scene I was working on before would've rendered, just too many things going on in it.  Anyway, thanks for the help and comments. smiley

Oh I can't attach a webp here... surprise

Well, here's a compressed png at 90% quality which came out to 11.2mb still in 8k.  Lol, I couldn't attach that either.  Hmm.  Okay.  Imgur to the rescue.

    Happy holidays

EDIT:  Well, it wouldn't let me link to imgur either. crying  Oh well.

  • If the image is less than 5Mb, you can attach it directly to a post.

  • I think the Daz housecat is just too realistic. Nothing ever runs smoothly if there's a cat involved.

It's not even remotely realistic let alone too realistic. Sounds like user error or poorly optimised product.
