Approximate Render Time?

I realize this probably varies by computer but I was wondering if there is anyone out there working with an i3core processor and 4mb RAM. My render time for an uncomplicated environment (walls, ceiling, floor) with one character is between 1-2 hrs. I am rendering the same environment with 3 characters now, I am 13mins in and am still looking at a checker screen. I do have one program that requires a lot of RAM but its not running. I dont even have Firefox open. I'm using my phone to type this. Is this normal or do I need more hamsters and a bigger wheel? Thanks.

I take it you mean 4GB RAM. With only that much, there is probably a lot of disk swaps going on, as your operating system loads and unloads segments of RAM to your hard drive. Definitely not efficient, and not fun.

The amount of RAM recommended for D|S is pretty much just for the program and a simple scene. Once you add characters and even standard resolution textures, RAM usage can easily go to 6-9GB, and beyond.

More memory won't hurt...but no idea if it will make the render faster.   If a lot of stuff has been swapped to disk (virtual memory) and there isn't quite enough to have the scene loaded AND render, then, yes more memory can speed things up a bit.  But if there isn't swapping going on, then it won't speed up anything, much or at all.

More CPU power will definitely help speed things up.

Oh its supposed to be 4GB?!! No wonder!! Kidding. Yes I did mean GB. Sure is running like 4mb though. I know I can upgrade both and want to. But if I had to pick, which one will help most, i7core or 8GB RAM? (which is the most my Comp will handle.)

great, thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

  • I was running DAZ 4.8 on a laptop with an i5 and 4GB RAM and I couldn't render at all. It would crash every time. So I just spent time learning the program without rendering for a couple months and got a new PC with an i7, 16GB RAM and a GeForce GTX970 graphics card. Rendering can take 5-10 minutes sometimes, 30-40 at other times. If it lasts longer than that, I can assume it will eventually crash (and it does).
