Ring Light Camera

Ring Light Camera, includes a portrait camera setup plus a simple model of a flat torus with an emissive Iray material on one sidem with a couple of morphs to control the diameter of the whole ring, and the width of the surface independent of the ring diameter. The light is a child of the camera, which you can simply move around as you would any camera and the light will follow it automatically. This is a pretty straightforward if simple approximation of how a real ring light/camera setup works, although I didn't bother to model all the detailed hardware a real camera/light rig of this type would have.

To use, simply load the Scene Subset "Ring Light Camera" into your scene - this will normally switch the selected viewport camera to the camera you just loaded but you may occasionally need to switch the camera yourself. Intended to be used at a short distance, e.g 70-100cm or 2-3 feet. For best results you should use a muted, indoor HDRI main light, or perhaps no HDRI at all and a fully enclosed render room with some supporting lights. While you can tinker with the emissive material if you want to, you can get a lot of variety out of how the light behaves by simply adjusting the morphs and changing the radius or light width.

For use with a character, you can simply select the character's Head and hit the View: Frame control to quickly get the camera in the ballpark of where it should be.
