Gear icon for sliders missing Parameter Settings option

I tried to turn off limits for Max Samples in the Render Tab, but when I click the gear there is no option to adjust Parameter Settings. None of the sliders in the render tab have this option, nor do the sliders in the Simulation Tab. It's still there in the Parameter Tab, Shaping Tab, and Posing Tab, though. I figure it must be something I inadvertantly turned off, but how do I get it back?
