Does DS use an algorithm for making some edges sharp? [Solved]

I make hard surface models in Blender, transfer them to DS via .obj, and find that some of the edges are sharp, as if I had marked them to be sharp in Blender. But I did no such marking.

Is DS doing this? Or is Blender still marking some edges as sharp to spite my various attempts to prevent it from doing so?

Near as I can tell, either DS or Blender is deciding which edges to make sharp according to the rule: if the dihedral angle is 90 degrees or less, make it sharp.

But which program is doing this, DS or Blender?

  • Both probably do it separately - in DS it is in the Surfaces pane, look for Smoothing Angle.

Thanks for the solution, Richard. Adjusting the angle up fixed it.

In DS 4.11, the property in the Surfaces tab presents as a boolean on/off button for "Smoothing", and directly under it is the "Angle" property wherein ya type the degree threshhold.
