Hiding outfits? Why are materials not part of the timeline naturally?

Is there a way without buying additional resources to keyframe an outfit showing on in one fram, and off in the next. This would allow me compare outfits easily in one file? This would be easy if cutout was animateable as I feel it should be. Using 4.21.1.80
I know I could create iterations of the file, but what a pain to keep track especially if I come back to the file or files months later.

I can do this in Carrara
no help I know, just bragging
I think MCasual has a script that allows you to animate things like that. It's called matAnim. All his stuff is free, on his Google site.
Actually now I think about it there's a way to animate visibility, though if I remember correctly this wasn't remembered through a file save. It's a little script:
yeah you did say materials not whole meshes
funny thing is a parameter exists for visibility on the D|S timeline but unlike Carrara, iClone and Blender clicking visibility doesn't create a keyframe
I would be happy to hide the entire mesh as well.
Will certainly try this
There are a couple of sample scripts that show how to add a node via script that has a link to a non-aniamtable (e.g. material) property
