New to this and on a Mac

Hi, I just got Daz 3D a few days ago.  I am on a mac   10.11.  I have seen numerous threads and video on how to install the free content, but it seem to be mostly for windows.  I down load a few few file to check this program out but I can get them into the folder except manualy.

Hi, I moved this to New Users as this forum is set up to better help you get started with Daz Studio which is what I believe you mean you downloaded as Daz 3D is the name of the company.  :)  Have you installed Studio?

On the interface, lower right-hand side, you should find a button that says "Select a Lesson".  With this, you can go through different lessons to learn the interface and working with products.  Daz products rely on a hierarchy for where things go, and uses DIM to automatically unpack and place the product files to their final destinations.  With products from other places than Daz and freebies, DIM can't work with them, but they are often in zip format.  If you unzip (on my Mac, I just use the Archive Utility), you will see folders with other folders nested in these.  If it is set up for Daz Studio, the top hierarchy folder will normally be named My Daz 3D Library which is where your Daz Studio files are stored.

If you allowed Studio to install as it should, you'll find what you need in Macintosh HD>Users>Shared>My Daz 3D Library.  Then you match up folders by opening two finder windows: one for your unzipped folder and one for your My Daz 3D Library by opening.

    Examples:

    Name of Unzipped freebie

My Daz Library>data>Daz 3D>Genesis 2>Female>Name of Character (this is the first unique name - till now, there is a counterpart in your My Daz 3D Library folder in the second finder window.  This is the folder you will copy into the Female folder.  If you try to copy any of the previous folders, they will replace and you do not want to do that.)

    >People>Genesis 2 Female>Characters>Name of Character (same thing, this is the first unique name and is the one you copy into the Characters folder)

If you have any qualms, write out the folder structure for what's in your Freebie, that you downloaded, and ask us here where things go.  I hope this helps to explain and welcome to the forums.

  • Hi,  Ok So I have one "Freebie"  that I did that had about 20 levels of Folders.  One of them has 1) Content  then  2) Data, People Runtime {for Poser} then each one has the unique portion at different levels.

So the Rule is The Files are Always in the last level and all folders above are shared and empty.  If those are the Rules then I can write a script to do this.  If the Folders Follow Naming Conventions, the I just move the files with the entire name path. I tried pressing the Alt when I dragged and Drop to get the "Merge" Folder, but it seemed to mess things up.  Also Winzip for mac does not protect the folder structure. I can do this in Filemaker, pretty easy.  I will try applescript and automator. If I succeed I will post it

Daz 3D is the the dba and tradmark, Daz Productions, Inc is the company  ;)  according to the bottom of Safari.

Thank You,  I used Poser about 15 years ago  (wow!) and this one is Free.  I got on board at the right time.  I thought Daz 3D was like renderocity.  I am out of the loop

Hi,  Ok So I have one "Freebie"  that I did that had about 20 levels of Folders.  One of them has 1) Content  then  2) Data, People Runtime {for Poser} then each one has the unique portion at different levels.

What you need to do, is decide what your DAZ 3D library folder is.   The current name that DIM (DAZ Install Manager) uses is 'My DAZ 3D library'.   prior to that, it used to be called My Library, and even earlier it was called Content.

The top level folder that you have in the ZIP called 'Content' is simply a container for all of the other folders, and you should merge the contents of that folder into your main DAZ 3D library folder.   In other words, igonore the content folder, but merge it's contents (Data, People and Runtime) into your existing library folder.   I realise merging may be problematic on a Mac, but that is what needs to be done.

Any files that you download from DAZ 3D should come as ZIPs, and the structure will be the same as you have noted.   A folder called 'Content' which is just a generic name for your DAZ 3D library (whatever it is called).
