Coloring/shading strand-based hair

One reason I don't use strand-based hair that much is that I have a tough time getting the hairs to match the color I'd like them to be. My biggest problem tends to be that it comes out looking darker than I intend. Looking for any tips on proper texturing/shading of strand-based hair. Thanks.
