How do I stop part of a figure from rendering?

Hi all,

I'm rendering a scene with a G3F figure that I want to have a skeletal arm. I have gone through all the finger, hand, forearm etc parts of the figure and set each one to "not visible" and "not visible in render" and then placed a skeleton arm as if it's her arm (I'm planning to fix the transition spot in photoshop).

However, when I render the scene, the hidden arm shows up in the render anyway, even though it's not visible in DS and it's set to not render. How can I make it so just the arm doesn't render?

Thanks in advance!

One approach would be to select the polygons and then hide them...

    1. make sure the figure is selected in the scene

    2. switch to the Geometry Editor tool by pulling down Tools --> Geometry Editor (or Alt+Shift+G)

    3. right click in the viewport and choose Geometry Selection --> Select by --> Face Groups--> [any group you want to hide]

    4. right click in the viewport and choose Geometry Visibility --> Hide Selected Polygon(s)

    5. go back and perform steps 3 and 4 for all remaining surfaces you want to hide

As an alternate to step 3, you could just drag over the polygons in the viewport to select them, and then continue to step 4

Another approach would be to adjust the materials by turning down the opacity for various surfaces:

    1. make sure the figure is selected in the scene

    2. in the Surfaces Pane multi-select all of the surfaces you want to hide (hold control and click the various surfaces to multi-select).

    3. then drag the Cutout Opacity slider all the way down to 0. That's assuming you are using an Iray shader. If it is a 3Delight shader, it would be called "Opacity Strength" or something close to that.

This might not work for you if you want to hide just one arm (as opposed to both), but I thought I'd mention the technique.

  • Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, option one doesn;t seem to have worked - it still just shows up in the render, even though it's seemingly been set not too (and polygons hidden).

Option 2 wont work, because as you said, I only want to hide one arm. It's weird - you would think it would be possible to hide just a *part* of an object, but it doesn't seem to like that :-/

I don;t know why it is not working for you?   How are you hiding the arm?

In the image below, all I did was turn off the 'eye' icon in the Scene pane for each of the body parts, I did not do anything else, even invisible in render, and the arm did not show.
