Daz Game Developer Licensing - one thing to clarify

Hello,

I am new to Daz3d and have just purchase several 3d models for testing.

I am aiming to use these in my Unity game.

I've  read your licensing scheme in using daz3d models in gaming , and understand most of the terms and conditions according to the following thread :

http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/2509/indie-game-license-i-m-confused

One thing I want to clarify is :

If I purchase an non Daz original product from Daz3d store which has only some body shape morphs, and I used this morphs to change the shape of the genesis body mesh. After that

this modifed mesh is baked and exported to and used in my game (i.e. I will not export any morphs, mesh or textures  from the thrid party product, only the final modify body mesh

of the genesis body). Is this scenerio covered by the Indie or commercial game license ?

Please clarify this as I have to know whether I have to re-do the modification again using Daz original product.

Thanks in advance.

The DAZ Originals Game licence is valid only on DAZ Originals.  Using a PA morph on a DAZ figure doesn't make it a DAZ Original, so no, it wouldn't be covered.

I am sure that Leana is correct, but this is a User Forum, so for a definitive answer to your question, you would need to contact DAZ 3D themselves by opening a Support ticket.

You're kind of answering your own question.  "If I purchase a non-Daz original" means it was done by a PA and is not owned by Daz, therefore it would be logical that it can't be covered by a license that stipulates Daz Originals.

Some PAs* also have a gaming license ... and/or could be contacted to see if arrangements could be made.

    * Rawart, Sickleyield, Predatron, Jack Tomalin, EmmaAndJordi, Merlin Studios, and IgnisSerpentus for example.

Those that have them are already shown in the store   http://www.daz3d.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=game+developers

  • I agreee that including  a PA product into my game require the game developemt license from the correspoinding vendor. But what I done is just using the partial body shaping morph

to alter the original body shape of genesis 3. I just found the following link from DAZ , saying that such kind of "Partial body morph" can be distributed commercially.

    http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/userguide/creating_content/modeling/tutorials/pbms/start

I wonder why I should buy a gamming license from the vendor of this shaping morph , just because I have used this morph as a tool in my development work.

    It also says clearly

Remember, you cannot include paramaters created by DAZ 3D or another vendor as part of your Product. Only select Parameters you have created.

Please ask DAZ 3D for clarification if you feel that you need any, only they can give you a definitive answer.

  • Just think about it from an ethical point of you - if you use a shaping morph to help you make your game then you are using that person's work to save you time/effort/learning new skills so it's only right that they should be included in those who receive recompense.

It's one thing to recompense, it's another thing to get repped off. cheeky

The License doesn't scale, so you need to shoot for milking it for all it's worth. It's never worth it for a single item or a single PBM.

My advice is, and will always be: either stick with Daz Originals and the DO license(and stockpile a ton of stuff), or merchant resources.

  • Merchant resources don't generally allow game use - mostly they are for creating content for image/movie creation which will be sold under the basic, non-game, license.

I would agree that game developers should plan carefully to make sure they are getting good value from the License(s) they buy.

They are merchant resources you can resell your creations as you like :) They are to create charaters usually, not specific to a format. Whether you render them, or sell the characters to others it's up to you.

(it's not like your putting their morph kit into your game...that seems crazy)

  • Do they explicitly say game work is allowed?
