Using alternate material files between characters

This is more of a very basic and generic question.

Sometimes one of a character's content files are absent a needed material file, or, the one that came with the character is not desirable.  A couple of examples include a character that lacks anatomical elements, or, say, the sclera of the eyes that came with the character is not desirable.  Other examples might include makeup or a geo shell of an alternate character that is desired on the base character being used.  Are the articulated mesh structures within a specific character generation consistent enough such that materials from one character within a given generation be readily grafted onto another character of that same generation?  Also, is this what is referred to as "geo grafting".

You can swap material presets and even mix texture maps between characters of the same generation as long as they follow the same UVs. So you can certainly use the eye presets of one character or another. You can also use skin textures on different shapes without a problem. A geoshell can be used on any character of that same generation. Makeup set as LIE or as a Geoshell can work on any character as well. Makeup set as a material preset may have the face texture of that specific character baked in, so you would only be able to use it on that character unless the makeup is set on the overlay/makeup channels.

Characters that come with Geografts (tails, wings, etc). can be used on other characters with mixed results. That is because, in some cases, the geograft in question will only work/look good with the character it comes with, especially if that character is an extreme morph (monster/creature). That's why Geografts can be stand-alone products since most of the effort is concentrated on making it work with as many characters as possible.

    Excellent response, thank you!
