Creating surfaces in hexagon

Is it possible to select a set of faces of an object and add a new surface. I normally do this in wings3d by just selecting the faces and creating the material. I am wondering if there is a way to do this in hexagon

Do you have the Shading Doimains panel? It it bottom-left for me.
