How do I get rid of the overdone shine in a characters eyes.

My character looks like he's on the verge of tears and I would like to fix that. Unfortunatley I don't know how.

Are those reflections on the actual scene lights or are they painted on? They look like the latter, in whichc ase check to see if there is an option to remove the reflections from the eyes and if that fails check to see if there is a map with that kind of pattern applied to the eye surface in the Surefaces pane's Editor tab.

There isn't any option or map that seems to be applied.

if you select the material which is directly covering the iris, then go to the surfaces tab and check which surface that selected

if that's eye moisture or cornea (better check both) then go for the opacity map this has. Often there are white dots on that opacity map, you want to get rid of that map.

what I often do for g8 characters with that problem is to replace the moisture surface with a normal water shader and the cornea with a glass shader

but I really like what you made with that character, great design

You can turn down the glossy layered weight and/ or top coat weight on both the cornea, eye surface, and tear. Your lighting has a lot of specular in it. IMO, I think rotating the dome on the hdri a little bit may actually help more than adjusting the surfaces.
