Anybody else notice the lack of variety in g8m characters?

It seems like the only characters for g8m are monster or buff dudes with similar faces. Sometimes just rarely you'll get a different body type. I know it isn't every character but it sure is  a lot of them.

yeah, the ratio of male to female characters has always been off. If you are stuicking with GM8 it will get even worse since most new characters coming out will be for G9

Actually, there was a LOT of variety in Genesis 8 males. We got Ollie, Floyd, Dasan, Sanjay, Mr. Woo, Drutherson, etc.... There was a heck of a lot more than we had for Genesis 3. And those I listed were just the DO's.

There are a fair number of monsters, but there are quite a few humans with a good amount of variation for G8M here on Daz and other sites. Also, any G3M can be made into G8M using https://www.daz3d.com/character-converter-from-genesis-3-male-to-genesis-8-male

I recommend grabbing Sickleyield's 200 morphs for G8. That could help you a lot. You can get them off her DA page or her ShareCG page. And there are plenty of other packs and products for making your own G8M characters. FSMC is right, it's a drop in the bucket compared to G8F. Even so, there is still plenty available.

I own over 300 genesis 8 males from here and rendo. I didn't notice the lack of variety. Seems like quite a bit of variety from centaurs, fauns, to old men.

Genesis 9 really doesn't have a lot of men. Yet.

  • I didn't mean like racially or age mise, it's just that they all seem to have similar faces. And I know I'm face blind, but they all have a kinda generic guy face and at least semi-muscley body.

Kooki99 gave us a wide variety. JavierMicheal has an assortment. You must be looking at FW characters. When he changed to Emrys there were several variations, especially his PC+. And the Core Figures including 8.1 cover a lot of range. Torian and Assassin still aren't on the list.

do you have experience how well this works with custom dials? I have several characters on genesis 3 (females as well, I suspect there is a version for females as well?) which are highly mix and match. I was thinking of shifting them to genesis 8 at some point but redialing and bad UV seams when suing the same skin are troublesome

  • G3 HD morphs won't transfer to G8. Rebaking textures from G3 Daz Originals core characters to standard G3.G8 UVs will be necessary because of their use of custom unwraps.

Aside of not being able to transfer G3 HD morphs and extra work with map transfer, moving a character from G3 to G8 is very straightforward.

I don't. Sorry. I would not expect any problem - From what I've read, there should be no problem.  I can vouch for SY's 200 morphs, though. I like them. This thread might be more help https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/7663216/#Comment_7663216

Thanks a lot both of you, that looks like it might be feasible after all, with a bit more work but not as much as starting from scratch

This solves the G3M Core Figure UV problem. From the Details: "This product contains re-mapped UVs for all 13 of the Daz Original '7' figures that use unique UV maps, allowing your Genesis 8 Male to wear those skins and have them fit perfectly. Simply apply the materials and makeup options to Genesis 8 Male as you would to Genesis 3 Male."

One thing I've noticed moving characters from G3 to G8+ is, often there's barely any difference between HD morphs if the character has G8 equivalent. V7 and V8 have very small differences in their HD morphs. V8 and V8.1 HD morphs are so close for all purposes it could be the same HD sculpt reused.

Problem is with unique characters. Anneke and Damien, for an example. Sometimes it's possible to substitute from g8 characters that are close enough, sometimes it's not (with monstrous characters it's not, there's nothing G8 to replace Anneke's HD details). Then there's Rune 7, but this one is not a big loss.

I thought G8M had great  variety of characters

When compared to G8F there's fewer and less variety.  I'm going to use this space to shout out my favorite G8M's:

Hope someone from this list helps you on a future render.

I think there's actually MORE diversity in G8M than G8F, for one simple reason: male figures are allowed to diverge more from a physical ideal, while female figures are expected to still be sexy and conventionally attractive. There are outliers, of course, but I think this really exemplifies the situation: Xenoman is a pretty faithful representation of a well-known alien creature, while Xenogirl is a hot girl in an elaborate costume. I'm not blaming the creators for this, necessarily. Multiple creators have commented that creature designs for females tend not to sell as well, so to some extent, they're just following the market, but the problem extends well beyond creatures. Deepsea has now released George or an analogue thereof for three different generations, but I haven't seen an equivalent female character, from Deepsea or anyone else. Even the "fat" female characters are still shapely. The only PA I can think of who makes non-idealized female characters with any frequency is Spows. Then we can look at how different ethnicities are depicted. Tennessee, Dasan and Ohanzi are all indigenous American characters that look authentic, and I wouldn't necessarily call them ugly, but they're not conventionally beautiful, and two of them are older and weathered. Alawa, Dasan's counterpart, is a somewhat ethnically ambiguous sexy woman, and Xochil is a very accurate depiction of a Mesoamerican native (who is also sexy). The other native American female characters I've seen are overwhelmingly Pocahantas-y hot girls with brown skin and slightly indigenized features.

Misae was Spows' native american woman. More authentic than the others :).

I forgot about Misae, even though I own her. Yes, she's a great character, and of course it was Spows who made her. I also want to make it clear that I meant no disrespect to Alawa or Xochil, as I love both characters, but they're still rather idealized compared to their equivalent male characters.

It's easier to search at Posercontent, 35 pages of G8M with 36 per page...

Thank you for mentioning that, which gave me the idea to look at their Characters / Genesis 9 page, since Daz refuses to sort the store's People category properly.
