Soften Shadows

I love Daz Studio but no matter how much I play with shadow settings I can't soften them much? What am I doing wrong? Do I need to be in a certain render mode? Is there a global way to soften shadows?

Really having trouble with lights in this program generally... I'm no expert by any means but have worked lots in Vue and Poser and so many of the individual light settings don't seem to affect anything in repeated renders. Its very frustrating particularly because I love the rest of the program features so much...!

  • which render engine are you using  in Daz ?

one thing I do to lighten up the shadow, I'll copy the light that I'm using for shadow, and split the illumination between the 2, with just one for the shadow . .. bad explaination,  but hope it helps some

  • Thank you so much, but I'm not sure what that means? Is there no easy way to soften the shadows of existing lights? I see parameters for that but they don't seem to have much effect :(  Even when I specify 'No Shadows' the lights go right ahead and show them... I would like to use the technique you're suggesting bt when I do it seems to render many more shadows without softening the existing ones...

Which render engine are you using Iray or 3DL?

  • If Shadow type is not doing anything it sounds as if you are using Iray, in which case you need to use the shape/geometry settings to make the light source bigger. 3Delight does have a Softness setting which blurs shadows, but it doesn't actually incease the size of the light source so the terminator (transition from light to dark on a curved surface) still tends to look unnatural.
